I've been accepted!!!!!!!!!!!

Not to sound mean or anything, but how is this your parents fault? Cause they can't co-sign something for you?

And if you still wanna go for this, maybe instead you should just go for something within your limits of funds.

I mean do you really need to go cross country to go to film school? I'm sure there are lots on the east coast and way cheaper within your limits.

No need to go into debt about something, that might not even pan out for you.

The thing is, I don't want to stay coup up in NC all my life, let alone for film school.

And you answered your own question. Can't co-sign. My parents couldn't co-sign anything over.....10K, if that.

sorry to hear that. I didn't know that there was a limit for the amount your parents could co-sign for. My dad has been co-signing all my loans since freshman year.

Well, sometimes in life you can't always get what you want. I mean you're a young person. You'll like what 23 or so? If so you got a whole life ahead of you. To eventually get out of NC.

Whats wrong with going to school there? Sometimes you gotta take what you can get. It can either be that or don't go at all. Sometimes you gotta be grateful and greedy.

I mean I don't wanna be in PA for the rest of my life either. But i'm not off blaming my parents for it. And its their fault they don't have the money or credit for it.

A lot of public and private universities have excellent film programs taught by professors who have connections. LA is an expensive place altogether; not only do you have to worry about the loans you need to pay back, but you also have to consider living expenses.

You would be better off finding a liberal arts college (with a film program) that can offer you housing and options for co-signing private loans, than you would be picking yourself up from humble, affordable NC to busy, expensive SoCal.

I've been saying go to school here in NC. Heres your best choices.

UNC-G-They say they have a film program its more like a tv program. There facilities are small and there pretty much the black sheep on campus. No one knows where the building is, and the building is tiny and nasty. Most speakers they get work on tv. The head of there program has work on many public access shows.

NC school of the arts- First year you work with there cheap equipment this is standard like most school. They teach you alot, after your second year you have to choose your corse of study. Either directing, editing, cinematography, or producing. When you choose what you want your not allowed to take the course that go with what you didn't choose. So after year two no signing up for producing and then wanting to take an editing class. Also everything you do they own. If you write a screenplay for your final and then try to sell it, they will sue you. Same goes for making a short film that you want to expand to a feature. Also the head of the film program there produced some of the worst movies ever like BATS http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0200469/. Out of all the film schools in NC though theyv'e produced the most working in Hollywood.

UNC-W- The town has alot of movies(The Crow) and shows(Eastbound and down) shot so many chances for internships. A film studio is 10 mins from campus http://www.screengemsstudios.com/nc/. The school gets funding from industry families like Dino De Laurentiis, and Frank Capra. The film school draws so many people that after being accepted to the school, you must then apply again to get in. As long as you make at least a B your Freshmen year your in. They have so many classes you won't be able to take them all.

Those are the big 3. Pretty much every school has a film school. Most are small and lean more towards screenwriting like NC State. Western, and Ashville have film schools that are very small but do more than teach screenwriting. Elon teachs radio and tv. Theyv'e had people graduate whov'e won emmys.

Yeah, my parents are bad off. It's my Dad's fault...to a degree...he can make money, but...:csad: bad spender. What seriously drained him was that SMC Scam. You know, get a website online to sell stuff. Yeah, he ended up getting three....horrible decision, that and credit cards. Horrible...I wouldn't be shocked if we (Parents, not me) filed for bankruptcy, for a second time. :csad:

k lets all work at a solution now ... what the next best option out there?

Not work at fast food or go back to Wal-Mart. Granted, I left on good terms...but there's a good chance I be put back outside if I went back to Wal-Mart.

:cmad: 21! But thanks for making me feel older.

Bats...with Lou Diamond Phillips? That went to theaters, and then Sci-Fi made a tv sequel? Oh God...granted I would be somewhat happy in life if I got paid to amke b-movies for Sci-Fi Channel. And I would try hard...in least in terms of visual directing. (This is why I need film school to become a complete director...I seriously doubt I could direct actors with schooling. And I rather not ahev MTV acid editing in my fight scenes in movies. Watch the Cage/Scorpion fight in Mortal Kombat. That's how I would shoot a fight scene.

I guess I look into the NC State one....or Wilmington. One thing for sure...hell no to Winston Salem. Also, I think I need a 3.0 HS GPA for that school. My 1.6 ain't gonna work.

Wow, now 1.6! You best write a mean essay. I got into both schools but I had a 3.5 gpa so it was a little easier. Now theres other film school in SC as well. They just started a nice one in Greenville. You really need to look at your options. Or you could just make a movie. Theres tons of directors out there who either dropped out or just said F it and made it out on there own.

That's what I hope on plan doing.

I know i'm never gonna get into school. and even some directors said you don't need it. Only if you have the ways and funds to do it. But if you don't it's not really a problem. Just a little bit more harder to get attention.

What you mean by that?

On my LA Film School application, I had to write a paragraph or wto about why I wanted to go there. In it I mentioned my low High School GPA, but wrote something like 'I think I can do better at your Film School because film interests me' I can't remember. Whatever I wrote worked, cause I got accepted...

:csad: and then the Loans.

Just sent NC State Film Department an e-mail explaining my situation with LA Film School (cause I asked how much will it cost to go to NC State Film) and asked if my GPA will be too low, even though it was good enough for LA Film School.

Good move?

Paul Anderson dropped out his first week. Vin Diesal directed a movie after his acting career never went anywhere, after he made Strays Spilelberg loved it and casted him in Saving private Ryan. David Gordan Green worked with his School of the arts buddies after he graduated to make George Washington. Ron Howard had connections to get into the film industry. Kevin Smith used all his money to make Clerks. Robert Rodrigues sold his body to sicence experiments to make his first movie. Brett Ratner went to film school.

Theres so many ways to break in.

Also I recomend you pick up Robert Rodrigues book "Rebel without a crew" it has wonderful tips and pretty muchs helps to carry on with your dreams. I think it'll help you alot madness.

Also, I know by watching movies with commentary tracks and reading online, I can learn about film and directing, and there are editing programs you can buy to edit movies on, this I know. But...with film school, someone can hold my hand while I do this. Let's put it that way...

Its a start. There film school is very new. They might work my States grade point standards. Its worth a shot. I didn't mean anything bad with the essay. I just mean you best work hard on getting in. GPA isn't everything but it certainly helps.

Ratner went to NY Film School, right? I know one of the guys behind Crank and Crank 2 went to LA Film School. And I know Kevin Smith bad mouth Vancouver for being boring or something. (Think this was on the first A Night with Kevin Smith movie)

I pick it up after I finish Josh Hamilton: Beyond Belief. Good story so far.

Thats how I work. With UNC-W I plan on staying the summer as my rents life there so I plan on interning on movie and shows all the time. While making my own short films in the area.

I'm not gonna lie, I was kinda surprised I got accepted into LA Film School with my low GPA. I probably call up LA and tell them I can't afford to go there and drop out sometime before next Monday. Before I do, I want to look at other schools and contact them about costs and stuff.

Can that book be picked up at local book store and is it expensive?

Thats basically how I learned what i've learned. Through listening to filmmakers commentaries and reading scripts online.

To see what to do and to see where I was making mistakes.

let me ask you ETM. Have you ever written a full length script or shot any kind of footage. Even if it was just test footage.

If you want some help IMDB has a list of every film school.

I bought rebel in the film and entertainment section at B and N. Its kind of an old book so you'd have to special order at the store but that won't be much of a problem. The book cost $15. http://www.amazon.com/Rebel-without-Crew-23-Year-Old-Filmmaker/dp/0452271878

When I went to the School of the arts for that summer program I shot a short. It was horrible, I made it bad on perpose after they told me they owned it. I didn't like that. I'd put it online, or heck even the best student film they had online which I produced by the way, but I'd get my pants sued.
I was about to shoot a rap video for a friend but the deal fell through when my camera broke. Which is to be expected its from 2001.

 did you forget? I wrote five scripts from 17-20. And have those registered under WGAe or WGAw. Remember? You asked like 2 years ago about screenwriting and I told you what I knew back then.

I even paid a guy in LA (before even thinking about going into directing at LA Film School) to read my script and see what he thought. Basically tore it to shreds but offered me a **** load of advice to become better (watch movies, read screenwriting books, write, write, write, etc. One painful 50 min phone call it was...but he was right (and he's sent me MANY unproduced scripts to read via e-mail...which I haven't...yet) to become better. Long story short, right now, I am okay-pretty good at writing action scenes...and I am detailed about it, cause I love action/fights in movies)

i say find a cheaper film school. The truth is though, if you really wanna make it, New York, and Los angeles are your best bets for location (boston, and san fransisco are also good locals for film) but yea, just try to get some grants and scholarships for a cheaper school.. hell even a LA film class at SMC (santa monica college) $20 a unit (i believe) is still a better place to learn film then most locations

Madness theres tons of video equipment places here in the state. You have the script, you just need the tools. Just go out and make a movie now. It'll saves you thousands of dollars from doing that instead of school.

Holy ****...RR. He wrote that book. Granted, I haven't see many of his movies (just parts) except for Planet Terror when I saw Grindhouse in theaters (that was worth the night time ticket price ftw) I see if Books A Million has it.

Not only that, I wrote a treatment, but I can't discuss that here, yet.

There was a poster here who read a early rough draft of one my zombie script...which...was my first script...and over the years, nothing really changed. Except for dialouge. (Which isn't a rewrite, it's just tweaking a script basically...which I didn't know at the time.) In any case, he was part of a tiny small production company, but ended up passing on it.

My longest script was 89 pages...my shortest in the 70's..that 89 pages script was about a failed writer that in the end kills himself...and it sucked. It was kinda based on me, but obviosuly I am still alive. The script was a Drama and hard to write (I'm slightly better at horror or action/horror)
