This is a continuation thread, the old thread is [split]336496[/split]
SOURCEMuch of the world has received Iron Man 2 already (Ive seen it with a paying crowd, and rather liked it), but the USA and Canada do not. Almost as though compensation for the wait, however, it seems that the films prints are coming to North American cinemas with a special in-the-can bonus.
Pretty much recreating the surprise of when Cloverfield burst from the shadows with a mysterious trailer before Transformers, it looks as though a new secret project from JJ Abrams is going to be officially unveiled this Thursday, when Iron Man 2 takes its first bow at midnight screenings.
This is curious enough. There are, however, some other small, teasing details to discuss and theyve gotten me even more interested.
Note that all of this comes from Drew McWeeny at Hit Fix who, if I read the situation right, was actually considering not posting the story and keeping the trailer secret (see: Twitter). Has he done the wrong thing? Has he undercut the magic a little?
dont think so. He certainly hasnt got any info to share on what is actually in the trailer, or even a hint of what the film might be about. Drew has only given the hype and anticipation a kick-start. Then again, I would say that - look what I do for a living.
Okay, maybe there are some tiny hints of what the film might be about. Theres a title for one thing: Super 8. This might be, Im thinking, just a code title, though I assumed the same about Cloverfield. And theres some suggestion of rumours (which rumours? where?) that the film is somehow a Cloverfield sequel.
One theory would be that the film is a Cloverfield prequel - Super 8 home movies being a precursor to the video we associate with the first film. I think that theory is likely wrong, but you never know.
I also wonder if Super 8 is the same thing as 500 Rads, a previously reported secret Abrams project ? Very possibly, I think. How many mystery boxes can one man be prepping?
The story goes that Abrams directed the teaser but isnt directing the film. Who is? And why didnt they direct the teaser?
So, there we go - more questions than answers and Im sure theres more of both to come (and in similar proportions) when the trailer gets unspooled for the first time this Thursday PM. Ill see you back here at /Film then.
Verdict:
I kinda liked it. 3.5/5 to put a rough score on it... Maybe even a 4.
Bad point:
Absolutely atrocious sound mix. Honestly, quiet dialogue and ear-splitting effects? The voices were all too often sounding like a no-reverb ADR track with no sparkle whatsoever, and yet someone had really gone to town doing the train effects.
Good point:
The most awesome train wreck ever committed to the big screen. If fact, Super 8 is probably worth it just to see the train get derailed alone.
Other comments:
- Also has the worst train wreck ever. How does that work? Best and worst all in the one movie...
- The creature is inventive enough, although people will instantly be comparing it to...
- Zombies... Now I know some people will be wondering WTF??? but it works...Cloverfield.
Big, pissed off and gallops around spider-style on all sixes. It gets a nice close up too.
And remain seated when the credits start.
Super 8 Tracking Poorly
Providing yet another justification for studios to keep churning out sequels of successful movies, New York magazine is reporting that J.J. Abrams’s Super 8, one of the few original blockbusters being released this summer, is tracking poorly. Citing figures from Nrg tracking polls, New York said that only one in three moviegoers is expressing “definite interest” in seeing the film, which opens on Friday. Lack of interest in the movie is being attributed to a low-key marketing campaign in which little is revealed about the movie’s content in either trailers or advertisements. Commenting on the strategy Deadline.com’s Michael Fleming said on Monday, “This is a bold gamble Paramount is taking, at a time when the mission of studio marketers is to deliver the highest possible opening weekend, no matter how many plot highlights and spoilers are sacrificed in TV spots. Several marketing experts I checked were buzzing with the assertion that Par’s decision to protect the purity of the movie-going experience could put the film in an opening weekend hole it will be hard pressed to recover from.” On the other hand, the Rotten Tomatoes website says that 92 percent of its users want to see the movie, early reviews have been mostly positive, and several persons who have seen the movie at previews have remarked online that they want to see it again. »

Paramount and Twitter announced special sneak peek screenings of J.J. Abrams and Steven Spielberg's Super 8 happening on Thursday:
Paramount Pictures and Twitter jointly announced today sneak preview showings of the movie SUPER 8 for 1-day only on Thursday, June 9th, in advance of the film's scheduled nationwide release on Friday, June 10th. To promote the sneak previews, the companies have designated the hashtag #Super8Secret, which Paramount has also sponsored as a Promoted Trend, allowing Twitter's global user base a direct link to buy tickets to the advanced previews. At select, participating theatres in the United States, SUPER 8 Sneak Preview moviegoers will be treated to a free popcorn (with a concession purchase) at each sneak preview show. Hosting movie sneak previews marks a first for Twitter. This promotion continues a key partnership between Paramount and Twitter on SUPER 8. The duo joined forces in March for the movie's exclusive trailer premiere via Twitter, another exciting first for the site.
SUPER 8, from writer/director J.J. Abrams and producer Steven Spielberg, will open exclusively tomorrow, June 9th, on over 300 screens nationwide, featuring all 239 IMAX playdates in the U.S. and Canada. Fans can go to Twitter.com/Super8Movie and use #Super8Secret to share information about the movie with friends. To be among the first to see SUPER 8, visit Super8-movie.com for tickets and show times.
"With SUPER 8, J.J. and Steven have created a really fun and engaging movie for all ages," said Rob Moore, Vice Chairman of Paramount Pictures. "We are excited to finally get it out into the marketplace and using this sneak preview promotion with Twitter to kick start the film's release, is an unprecedented way to get people into theaters and talking about the movie."
"Twitter is how we hear about new movies and share our tiny reviews before the credits finish rolling," said Biz Stone, Twitter cofounder. "There are already millions of people talking about SUPER 8 on Twitter and Paramount gets that. Creating more excitement about the film with sneak previews and free popcorn is a smart way to make this film a global conversation even before it's released."
"Twitter has the incredible capability of spreading buzz in real-time, as well as fostering communal conversations that encapsulate large audiences in a matter of seconds. We believe these elements are key in promoting a movie like SUPER 8 that has such incredible playability and the potential for unlimited positive word of mouth," said Amy Powell, Paramount's Executive Vice President, Interactive Marketing Strategies & Film Production.
SUPER 8 is an Amblin Entertainment / Bad Robot production, directed by Abrams from his original script and produced by Steven Spielberg, Abrams and Bryan Burk. The film stars Kyle Chandler, Elle Fanning, Joel Courtney, Gabriel Basso, Noah Emmerich, Ron Eldard, Riley Griffiths, Ryan Lee and Zach Mills. The movie takes place in the summer of 1979, where a group of friends in a small Ohio town witness a catastrophic train crash while making a super 8 movie and soon suspect that it was not an accident. Shortly after, unusual disappearances and inexplicable events begin to take place in town, and the local Deputy tries to uncover the truth - something more terrifying than any of them could have imagined.
I'd be a lot more worried about the fate of "original" movies if Super 8 wasn't trying so darn hard to sell itself as the child of Close Encounters of the Third Kind and E.T.
Inception sold itself as 100% a Christopher Nolan film. Super 8 hasn't sold its own identity and reason for being.
Yeah I posted it in the old thread but no one looked. lolWas there a new trailer the other day?
