New Rockstar Games Franchise Exclusive to the PS3

+ Posted by Michael Shorrock // Director of 3rd Party Relations, SCEA

This is Michael Shorrock. I’m the Director of 3rd Party Relations at SCEA. As you may have seen this morning/last night on GameHead with Geoff Keighley, we are announcing that a new franchise from Rockstar Games will be exclusive to PS3. As part of our long standing relationship with Rockstar, and the incredible success for both companies with the cultural icon that is Grand Theft Auto, we’ve agreed to the PlayStation exclusive rights of the next great franchise from the Rockstar studios.

Everyone knows to have success in this business you need to look ahead, identifying the talent and titles that are going to give consumers new kinds of gaming experiences that help set the bar for the rest of the industry. Rockstar has a heritage for doing just that. We have had incredible success with the GTA franchise and are happy to continue to offer those titles on our platforms, and even more excited about what’s to come from the current and future relationship between our companies. Rockstar really wanted to make a game that you can truly only do on PS3, harnessing the power of CELL and Blu-ray disc and this deal lets them do just that.. This is really a win-win situation for both companies. As Jack mentioned in the interview with Geoff, this franchise is not LA Noire, but something all new. We agreed with Rockstar and Take-Two Interactive Software that we wouldn’t disclose anything more about the deal or title at this time, so stay tuned, we’ll share more info as soon as we can.

Im not so sure that was the smartest move but only time will tell. I just hoep this new series turns out well. Im interested in seeing what they have planned since they want to take advantage of the CELL and BR

Jack's a plays a lousy bluff if you ask me

I hope this begins a bigger trend with other developers, now that they have gotten a better grasp on developing on the system.

they better hope it's more GTA and less State Of Emergency/Manhunt :o

Yeah, if this is indeed true, then it does seem like a pretty big gamble on Sony's part. GTA IV as an exclusive was a definite system seller no matter what. Now, a new exclusive franchise could become more of a system seller down the road if it's good, but that is anything but a gaurantee. Rockstars other titles have been met with mediocre reviews, and even the ones that you can call a good game sold nowhere near as well as GTA.

What if it's not like GTA at all? LOL an RPG!!!!

You play as Tommy Vercetti and you have to kill 33 hookers in order to become a class 5 Paladin.

Tretton is either bulls**ting or this was a completely stupid move. All Rockstar has is Grand Theft Auto. The rest of their games suck :o

If you played as Tommy I would actually play that game.

Bully was pretty good. Im willing to be a bit optimistic here bc Rockstar is capable of making games that are worth playing outside of GTA

The only other Rockstar game I still like is Red Dead Revolver.

It sounds stupid to me. Why did they have to get rid of GTA in order to get an exclusive game? Rockstar is allowed to make that decision on their own and could have very well done a ps3 only game anyway. It seems like a not-really excuse for why they lost GTA exclusive-ness.

Well it seems like both Sony and Rockstar were interested in doing a typical GTA timed exclusivit. The projected PS3 install abse because of the high price probably couldn't justify it for Rockstar or for Sony to pay them an amount necessary (on top of Take Two's Financial situations). So instead Sony cut a deal for the big game Rockstar is working on to come out after GTA IV.

If it cost Microsoft 50 million just for some content that YOU as the user have to pay for, it's gotta be A LOT

daaaaaaaaaaaaaaamn. if i was sony i'll say F that too.

now what aboutassasains creed, how much do you think its exclusivity could've gone for?

Exclusivity is a dumb thing that Sony and Microsoft are obsessed with. And it really puts a burden on the consumer.

One day I hope all the gaming companies merge into one. So we'd get one super powerd console, with no worry that a game won't be made for it. :csad: Oh to dream

There's a reason that Voltron is a fictional charater you know. :o

its not so dumb when it makes them money.

And competition is a good thing.

because the conceptworks better that way?

btw i never understood exlcusives, what does the console manufacture get in return besides selling more units? do they make any money on the game being plubished? sure you sellconsoles, but thatcan't be enough to offset the amount you spent on an exclusive right?

Game companies for the most part do not make money on consoles sold, at least not until several years into their runs. They recover up losses in software. The more software they sell, the more money they make. Hence why exclusives are so important

so if assains creedwould've been a ps3 exclusive. sonywould be making money on it? they'll be publishing the game instead of ubisoft?
