I love Japan! I've been studying karate since I was 5 years old and when an ex girlfriend of mine got a job teaching English in Tokyo for 6 months I jumped at the chance. I got to train in Tokyo at Kyokushin Karate's hunbu (headquarters) with our grandmaster, probably the most fulfilling time of my life. We were there spring-summer and worked in the week then traveled on the weekends, beaches, historical sites, all of it amazing. I also liked being the tallest guy around. LOL

What did you for work?

I'm a journalist, I worked at a TV station over there writing copy for them to read on English portions of their broadcasts. Good to have a couple college degrees, you can work anywhere in the world.

Been there twice. Loved it.

Tokyo is like several New Yorks mashed together. Seriously - each major part of Tokyo seems to have its own Times Square. It's awesome.

Been throughout southern and central Honshu (large middle island), but not up north to Hokkaido yet. Hope to do that someday.

Spent 2 years there when I was in the USN....nice place, lots of sights, arcades are pretty sweet...I was stationed in a city called Yokosuka, about 30 min away from Yokohama

2 years kicks the ass of my 6 months in Tokyo! I wanna make it back this year, my ex and I spent a good amount of time in this charming little town/sea port Hakodate. Excellent parks, people, very small town, and amazing food.

Is it incredibly expensive to visit. How much do you think one would spend on like a two week vacation?

I taught English for a year in Gifu which is outside of Nagoya. It sucked until I got my work routine down and my Internet set up. I made it to Tokyo for a day or two, a day in historic Kyoto. I went into the biggest ass Starbucks I've ever seen. There were three people just to tell me what line to stand in. Saw a bunch of funny stuff you see on www.engrish.com

Cool tip #1 No tipping in Japan. Makes eating out and taking a taxi much easier.
