As the title states, this is a manga that follows the cult classic film that bears the similar name. The story picks up 13 years after the film ends, with the focus shifting from Sarah to her younger brother Toby, whom she worked to save in the first film. While Jareth, the Goblin King, said that he wouldn't pursue Sarah anymore, he didn't say the same for Toby. He's been making the boy's life interesting in the years since the film's end, granting him his obscure wishes, seemingly preparing him for something. He then tricks Toby into coming to his world of the Labyrinth, and his motives are far from noble.
The story is to be told in four volumes, the first two already out now, the next one due I believe in November. I'll say that the first was a bit of a disappointment. The story didn't quite match the feel of the movie, and Toby wasn't the most likable protagonist, acting like a bit of a brat at times. The art was a disappointment as well. I'm not a manga reader at all, and I'd always heard how manga can be very detailed and have a big wow factor. This art was quite plain, with many human like characters looking similar, and I had to be told who was Sarah, because she looked nothing similar to the Connelly. And I'm not saying she had to, but at the end of the second book, are several guest art pages that show several artists who made her look more like the film version that would have made better choices for the artists. The second book, however, is a much marked improvement over the first. The story picks up the pace, giving us more information on several interesting new characters with interesting abilities and histories, and the art improves a bit as well. If this keeps up, the third might be even better and be worthy of the cult following of the film.
So, has anyone else checked this out yet?
