JK Rowling reveals truth about Dumbledore- He was gay

OK, I guess I need to actually state it: I still like Dumbledore's character just the same - gay, straight or asexual. It's a non-issue with the way the character exists in the books, and it's so easy to either ignore or embrace based on your feelings towards it.

However, I do think that incorporating any kind of nudge-wink reference to the subject in the remaining two movies is a bad idea. If it wasn't important enough to be made clear in the books, then the same should hold true for the movies.

maybe this was some detail of her character she always had but felt she couldnt reveal prerelease of the final book for fear of censorship series cancellation or even christian activists
That's possible, too. It's a huge risk, though: would the ensuing controversy hurt or help the sales? I would have played it safe just like she did.

On the other hand, the book is still selling. Generating this sort of controversy this late in the game may have been the smartest thing she could do.

The reaction alone would suggest otherwise.

Still, my point is "how long can she really ride this?" If she comes out with another 'small fact', she'll just be seen as attention-hungry. The most that this could go is some time-wasting protest on how the books promote homosexuality, which would die out once people employed some common sense. I give this a week before it turns old.

Maybe she'd only need a week at a time, though. Maybe this is all that's needed to temporarily boost sales.

People are stupid: they'll fall for the hype. I totally see your point, though.

Chibi... she has an encyclopedia coming out... that's suppose to give alot of back history on characters, so... she's riding nothing... and it's going to be a BUNCH of "small facts" I suggest people research her... she's never been an attention ****e.

I'm entertaining the notion that she might be out for attention, not that I absolutely believe this is a ploy for media mention.

TBH even if she has just done it for publicity go her she could of just increased her sales and reputation alot and as such make her a whole lot more money

Lucas could come out and say that Chewie was gay but we as readers don't have to believe it if we don't want to. Saying a character is homosexual to me is injecting a sexual aspect into that character that didn't previously exist, which is why she should keep her mouth shut about it.

$$$

i dont think this houldof been a debate in the modern world homosexuality is acceptable and it a fact of the matter the writer always imkagined him to be gay thats just like saying she always thought of him being english its not up for debate even if in people heads he isnt

i think peoples minds are getting warped these days... not everyone's a brittany or paris... she has no reason at all to spark a controversy to sell books.. the books sell fine on there own

or make her a hell of alot less... flaming her severely and losing all credibility

i think u overestimate the negative impact of a gay character most people nowadays except for a select few either dont care or see it as a plus which i think it is it adds an extra more human layer to this character

Very true. Nothing in the books really implied that Dumbledore was gay. Dumbledores friendship with Grindelward was just that a friendship. If that is the basis of Dumbledore being gay then that must mean Harry and Ron are also gay. I am not against the idea of it but if that was the point J.K Rowling was trying to put across to the reader then she could of gone about it in a much better way then she did.

Thanks to everyone for the contributions. Let's get this baby to 20 pages.

Here's an essay from the Opinion section of my school's paper today:

Dumbledore's "out"
Rowling's magical revelation helps gay rights

After cruising the headlines on MSNBC while taking a study break, I came across the most surprising one of all: “Dumbledore’s outing gives text new meaning.” Stunned, shocked and very curious, I perused the article for more information. J.K. Rowling, author of the Harry Potter series, spoke at Carnegie Hall in New York recently. After an inquiry about Dumbledore from a young reader, she revealed to everyone in the audience “that he was gay and had been in love with Grindelwald.” Even if you do not know who Grindelwald is or you do not read the Harry Potter series, this shocking revelation from the most popular writer in recent times is sure to have effects throughout the gay community.

Melissa Anelli, who runs a Harry Potter fan website, was quoted by The Associated Press as saying “Jo Rowling calling any Harry Potter character gay would make wonderful strides in tolerance toward homosexuality […] by dubbing someone so respected, so talented and so kind, as someone who just happens to be also homosexual, she’s reinforcing the idea that a person’s gayness is not something of which they should be ashamed.” Revealing Dumbledore’s character is gay offers more information for readers about Dumbledore’s personal life. In the final book, Rowling delved much deeper into Dumbledore’s history than in any other book in the series. With never a mention of any love affairs with women, never having had a wife and some strong emotional descriptions in book 7 toward Grindelwald (Dumbledore’s now-known love interest), the character of Dumbledore is more completely understood.

This new revelation gives us more information about a character in a book, but it also elevates the books to a new level in terms of cultural awareness and understanding toward homosexuality for millions of readers around the world.

Rowling could not have chosen a better character to have come out of the closet if her ultimate goal was to promote fairness and equity for all people, regardless of sexuality. And although it may come as a shock to fans – and with Rowling’s comment so recent it will be interesting to see the reactions as the news spreads – Dumbledore’s “coming out” is brave.

Perhaps Dumbledore’s coming out will get people talking. Rowling could have revealed such information to promote a higher cause, bringing more acceptance towards homosexuality, or perhaps Dumbledore’s homosexuality is simply a statement that anyone can be gay. But he or she is still a person with talents, personal issues, a history, a family, hopes, dreams and desires, and being gay is nothing to be embarrassed to talk about.

Perhaps Dumbledore will get people talking about homosexuality in the United States. Pertinent issues such as constitutional bans on gay marriage and overall negative attitudes toward homosexuality are in need of a change. One can only hope that in the 21st century, people will understand the variations in sexuality among the human species are normal. Gay, straight, lesbian or bisexual, everyone has equal rights to access to opportunities and the pursuit of happiness.

LOL, The Harry Potter books are already referenced by nutbags as "enticing kids into satanism" this will NOT help their cause.

Chewie couldn't be gay. :whatever:

He had a wife and a child named Lumpy.

Haven't you ever watched the Christmas Special? :o

People with wives and children can still be gay just so you know.

at this point doesn't it make Dumbledores close friendship with Harry a little inappropriate? Gay is not the issue...not with me. Its the controversy that is popping up all over the place over this entire thing...and to anyone who believes otherwise...judge not.

Chewie's crossbrow shot straight as an arrow. He never did the wookie reach around with another male. :down

I was reading the article above, and I wonder if Dumbledore could turn into the poster boy for the gay/lesbian community? I mean, I remember the character from ER who was a lesbian was a big lesbian icon a few years back. Wouldn't it be odd to see flags featuring Dumbledore in gay rights parades?

I have never seen nor heard of this Christmas Special. And why is George Lucas standing in front of me waving his hand around like a Jedi?
