John Campea has said that he was once a victim of a paedophile

Depends on the white guy. The jokes don't exist in a vacuum, so I'd have to consider other factors about that person's character. Some my closest white friends do exactly what you described, but it's just our humor. I love them and would defend them until my last breath if someone called them racist.

And whether his jokes were directly attacking specific people. For example, what Rosanne did. That was going too far and directly attacked a specific person and that on top of Rosanne's history and political leanings point to her being at best a grade A jackass and at worst a racist.

If black people can make jokes about black people, and jews can make jokes about the holocaust, does that mean pedophiles can make jokes about pedophilia?

I know plenty of child sexual abuse survivors joke about pedophilia to get over their trauma, so I think that pedophilia victims can make jokes about pedophilia (but I think there should be some sort of warning first).

I think in this case we are discussing a hypothetical stranger with large following and influence making offensive jokes, of course we understand that our close friends never mean to offend us.

I’m not talking about anybody’s friends (but as an aside keep an eye on those friends) I’m talking about someone you don’t know making slavery jokes like it’s no big thing. You won’t look at them and think “Hmm maybe this guy holds some denigrating views of black people for real?”...?

Out of curiosity if a white guy religioisly made “jokes” about negative stereotypes of black people or slavery would you adamantly argue that he’s not likely racist?

Bill Burr or Lois Ck can make all those jokes, still listen to their stuff.

You know we aren’t talking about some planned comedy sketch fam - I’m talking same context as Gunn basically: Private twitter account of a (then) no name creative and it’s littered with slavery/black jokes. People won’t scrutinize the **** out of that?

Yeah, I'm not gonna keep an eye on my friends lol.

And the scenario you described has happened to me many times. And I've learned enough about people and social justice to understand that a person can say racist things without actually being a racist. So my first thought when I hear people making racist jokes that I don't know is, "This is an offensive person." I don't make any other judgement calls about that person, because beyond those jokes I don't know them.

I actually ended up befriending someone I didn't know after hearing them make racist jokes. All it took was a conversation for us to get a better understanding of one another.

I’m going to tap out and hand you victory on this one because anybody willing to defend making racist jokes as much as you have deserves the win, man :funny:

Jokes aside, I’m glad to see someone that doesn’t look for any reason to go ballistic because of someone saying racist things, but IMO that kind of context is kind of suspicious to me personally and I feel like for many people jokes are ways they filter their true thoughts out , but to each their own.

You might be a racist, BN. :o

I have made racist jokes in real life, sure. But I can guarantee you that the ppl who really know me personally would place their hands in the fire for me. My gf is also a white gal, so you know i get the jokes from both sides. :woot:

I mean, I just don't trip over jokes. It's not that wild of a concept.

Sad to hear this about Campea, but it certainly explains why he’s been very vocal about this situation. This is why it pisses me off when people get outraged over issues like this, they don’t actually know what it’s like to be a victim of real events whether it’s abuse or racism or whatever injustice is done.

I said as much years ago and I still have one active user here hounding me about it. Like you I don’t think it’s that hard to understand, particularly if we’re talking about artists that work in a comedic space like Gunn.

Jokes are jokes and it usually doesn’t take that much effort to read someone’s intentions. It’s pretty telling that most of this faux-outrage is from the MAGA crowd.

Would I had fired Gunn working at any other studio? Nope. Would I had fired Gunn working for Disney? Yeah, probably. I honestly thought he wouldn't be fired at first, but can't really blame the mouse for cutting the cord.

I can’t either.
Disney is the most family friendly corporate brand around.
They had no choice but to fire Gunn and they should stand their ground.

What's MAGA ?

What's MAGA ?

Make America Great Again. The people who initially kicked up the Gunn-tweet frenzy are right-wing pundits mad that Gunn vocally (and justifiably) attacks them on twitter.

They don't give a **** about tasteless jokes. These are the same people eagerly supporting a president who says vile things on a semi-regular basis and call anyone who disagrees with them "snow flakes". They got him fired because of petty grudges, and it's a shame that Disney bent a knee to these clowns.

I think context is everything with jokes.

Who is telling the joke and what is the intent with the joke besides making people laugh is the key.

Obviously there are black, jewish, asian and female comedians that tell jokes about they gender or ethnic group that other comedians couldn't.

Scottish comedian Frankie Boyle comedy is very politically incorrect and he tells many pedophile jokes. His comedic persona is very much as a cynical and pessimistic guy who has no faith in the human race though so he gets away with saying a lot of things most comedians couldn't.

He's also a massive ****.
