I am with you on this, 3D isn't all it's cracked up to be when it's done half assed.the white apes have white fur. and today in CGI this is the hardest part to do. there is a reason why in Avatar they stayed away from furry characters.

I'm not familiar with this series and didn't look at the previous page to clue in because I was reading 3 other things. Excuse my ignorance, but that's why these mssg boards exist in the first place; to pass information along. There's no reason to be *****e bags about it.
To answer your Q, yes it is based on a (series) of books by Edgar Rice Burroughs (creator of Tarzan), the first of which (A Princess of Mars, which this film largely draws from) appeared in 1912.
