John Carter : A Princess of Mars

Hmm, looks like how I imagined it from the books. It's not like the Barsoom environment was that crazy (at the point of writing the book we didn't know that much about Mars). Sure it looks like earth, a dieing earth that never reached the level of populous we reached.

I guess at night, I was expecting it to look more stylized. at the sametime, the lack of CG is kinda refreshing.

Isn't Dynamite doing a comic version too....with a way more awesome cover.
I have no idea. I know that the Marvel cover I posted did look sketchy and weak. I like way more detail in my art than that. Although since Disney owns Marvel and Disney Pixar is doing this movie, it makes more sense for Marvel to be doing all and any comics that deal with John Carter.

John Carter is public domain isn't it? So basically any company is free to make a comic. Releasing it at the same time as the movie would be an easy cash in.

Mars should look more stunning. This just looks like it was filmed in a desert canyon location. It doesn't really do a great job of making it look unique. Making thingd completely red could limit a lot of the cinematography, as red is difficult to photograph, but the cinematography isn't doing anything for me. They could have jazzed things up. This is still a while away from finished, but I hope they can make it look more unique.

While it could definitely go for a bit for visual flair (though who knows what we'll see in the full movie). Real life mars is kind of dessert/canyon-like the film definitely needs some reddish sand.

However if a shot like the one below makes it into the film, we're good to go.

And then even from what we have, this shot looks pretty awesome

35 years ago today, the first successful Mars lander, Viking 1, sent back this picture.

Honestly, if you're expecting Mars to look like it does in the Marvin the Martian cartoons, doubt it was gonna fly. Obviously Stanton is doing it in a somewhat grounded manner, the way Mars would actually be depicted had this happened.

Judgeing from the shot I reposted with the bald guy, I'm sure overall the film will be good on this front, but the Red planet just doesnt seem red enough in many of those shots.

Maybe it's not so red up close. :p

saw the trailer today with capt.A. Looks good, but someone in the theater sitting near me said "is that he-man". Shoulda kept "of Mars" in the title.

I didn't comment but this shot alone give me goosebumps for some reason. It's a beautiful shot for one plus the music by Peter Gabriel made it that much better.
I can't wait to see this. I Just hope it's really good.

Did they release any concept art that shows what Woola will look like?

I've never actually read these books but my Dad raves about them and I can see they have inspired a lot of sci-fi movies over the years, however, I thought the trailer looked weak, I wasnt impressed in the slightest and was expecting to be, hopefully the next one has a bit more of a 'wow' factor.

This trailer really didn't show much of the alien guys so hopefully they will show up in the next one and really wow us some more. :)

I don't really know what to think about this movie yet. The trailer is too dour and sad, it needs to have a much more romping adventure tone says I.

I'm hoping we haven't seen anything yet. I'm also hoping we'll see a more Frazetta (fantasy looking) type look when this film is finished.

I hate to disappoint you, but they're going with a unique look that's different from Frank Franzetta's artwork as they found it somewhat dated.

Yeah, I can agree with that, creativity is somewhat dated!

Where's the source/article of that opinion by the filmmakers?

The link to the article doesn't work, but I did found it anyway.

New Look For Carter Of Mars?

Andrew Stanton, who is writing and directing John Carter of Mars, based on Edgar Rice Burroughs' books, told SCI FI Wire that he and co-writer Mark Andrews will be putting their own spin on the iconic story, and a Pixar manager added that the film will have a unique look as well.

"I'm going to do what I remember more than what they exactly do" in the books, Stanton said cryptically in a group interview at the Emeryville, Calif., headquarters of Pixar on Sept. 25.

Stanton (WALL*E) added that he is currently deep in writing with partner Andrews, a storyboard artist at Pixar, on the script for Carter. "John Carter of Mars is what I'm writing right now with Mark Andrews," Stanton said. "Writing, it's all about writing this year."

Jim Morris, general manager at Pixar Animation, promised that the movie will not look like previous attempts to adapt the franchise for the screen. "Everything that's been out there has been an attempt to kind of capture this Deco-esque [Frank] Frazetta vision of John Carter, which I think feels old and stale," he said. "And where Stanton is going--from what we've seen so far--is very different than that. And I think that the people who really love the essence of the books will really dig it, but so will audiences in general."

Asked if the film would be in 3-D, Morris added, "I hope not!"

The film is based on the early 20th-century Barsoom series of books by Burroughs, the California author of the Tarzan series. It centers on a Civil War veteran who finds himself transported to the Red Planet and caught up in various battles and intrigues involving giant green creatures and an alluring princess.

It's been reported that Carter may incorporate live-action elements amid animation. Stanton's WALL*E was the first Pixar production to incorporate live action. Morris declined to discuss the matter.

"John Carter is in its very early stages and there is much to figure out about that so we'd be premature," Morris said. "We are looking at a variety of different approaches and techniques for that ... We're kind of a bit early in the development of that."

Morris added: "I'm sure I speak for all of the science fiction geeks, fans and aficionados when I say it's finally time to see that movie. And I, for one, am delighted that Andrew Stanton is the guy that's making the movie, because he's a story-driven guy." --Patrick Lee, News Editor
