Have we been given a reason why John Mayers isn't in the second movie?

Do you mean in the script, or the decision not to have him in the film? The latter is because HB and the B.P.R.D. are going public, and Myers, the 'nanny squad', isn't needed any more. G had hoped for a cameo for Rupert, but sadly he was on stage in Kiss of the Spiderwoman and couldn't juggle his schedule.

I think its because the character sucked and he served no purpose in the sequel or the first movie at all really.

The idea of Hellboy needing a babysitter at all is stupid.

I didn't think so. Hellboy was getting out of control, losing touch with his father. Acting out in brash decisions to show his face (or-shadow) to the public. The fact that they brought in a very bright agent to handle the situation worked.

What I think, anyway.

I had no problem with him in the first movie. . .

I have no problem with him NOT being in the second movie...

I had no problem with Myers either - I thought it was a reasonable way to introduce non-HB fans to Hellboy's world, and I think Guillermo would have struggled to do it any other way. As for Rupert ... I think he did a terrific job of what was quite frankly a tough role to play. He made him very likeable, geeky and fun, and a wonderful foil to HB's pain-in-the-ass demeanor. I'll miss him.

He was nice "competition" for Liz, if you could call it that. Del Toro made a very entertaining high school crush short of love story with this guy that I really liked.

I didn't have a problem with him either and think that it's weird that a major character isn't even going to make an appearence in the sequel.

Because he was nothing more than a plain jane cookie cutter character to begin with. He sees this video of Liz Sherman and falls in love with her . . . what? Uh ok. There was no plot progression or build up to this, it was all just sort of there onscreen.

Hellboy as a character is never a character to be babysat. He's simply a cop. He never had to hide in secret or away from the public. He was normally just a cop walking the beat.

But the plot thread in the movie was that Bruttenholm hired Myers to literally replace Bruttenholm as Hellboy's new guardian of sorts. To watch over him and guide him. So Bruttenholm is dead now and Myers is gone.

Storyline wise I feel insulted that Myers was brought in as a replacement for Bruttenholm, only to toss Myers aside. OK, I never liked Myers in the first place, but this just really proves the point.

So Hellboy goes public in the new movie. Myers is nowhere to be seen, and Hellboy does things for himself without some guardian to tell him what to do or be Hellboy's surrogate father.

I never had that much of a problem with Meyers in the first movie, but I can't say I'm sad to see him go. He was a kinda pointless character, that was only there to give the audience a "human" character to empathise with for fear they otherwise wouldn't "get it". :whatever:

I gotta say Guillermo del Toro did a good job writing such a perfunctory character... He added some nice touches to him and the love story had its cute moments.

I saw an Interview with Del Toro he said the only reason Myers was in part one was so the average person had a character to relate too, someone who didn't know anything about Hellboy's world and being introduce to it for the first time.

Liz mentions in HB 2 that
Red had him transferred to Antarctica.

nice.

It's true that his character isn't needed for the sequel but his character was important enough to at least warrant a nod or explanation.

Had to problem with him in the first movie. He could've had a sequel, but him not being there didn't hurt anything.

Thats stupid since he earns Reds respect at the end of the first one & Red even says "Stick around". Hopefully he was transferred there for a secret reason like to guard something & he can be back for the third

i thoght he was cool how he got in hellboys face most of the time.

Got in Hellboy's face? He was scared of him most of the time he was around him. He wouldn't dare get in his face.

That throwaway line was code for: "This character sucked, so we wrote him out."

Face it. John Myers was nothing more than a bad studio executive note that Guillermo Del Toro was forced to put in the movie.

I agree that it bothered me how Liz stated that Hellboy had him transferred to Antartica. Especially since they seemed to be on good terms at the end of the first one.

They should've said he was transfered and not have Hellboy have anything to do with it.

I liked it, since it essentially proves the point of how bad of a character Myers was, that he didn't belong in these movies, and that he was not needed.

The movies need to be about the freaks and Hellboy. Not these dumb, plain jane human characters like John Myers which were a disgrace to the story.

Well, Hellboy did say that "he liked the cold". I don't know, maybe he could come back for the third, but I don't really see it.

Having Myers in the first one helped me get a better understanding of the Hellboy Universe because he gave me someone to relate to...like many others, I had never heard of Hellboy prior to the first movie.

Myers, like myself, was completely new to this world and in a certain way...I saw the first movie through his eyes.

Which is why I didn't mind his inclusion at all.

I agree. Didn't mind that he wasn't in this film though.
