Jurassic World - Part 6

Most filmmakers are very polite about other people's work, but Whedon likes to continuously take a **** on other filmmakers work.

I've also heard him criticise Watchmen, Dark Knight, Prometheus, ...

Joss being a pretentious shot taker? No way. :o

I can't/won't say that the scene in JW with Howard and Pratt is sexist... But it is so Zod Damned cliche'. We've seen this a billion times and we've seen it done better. That scene was badly done all around. It was Disney sitcom bad.

I complain about sexism as well as racism in cinema quite a bit so no my reaction has nothing to do with disagreeing that the scene was lazy and sexist because it damn well was. I still think it looks bad for Whedon to trash the clip because of the position that he is in.

Now he can continue to do his thing where he publicly criticizes other director's work and insinuate that if he had made whichever classic film then it would be perfect or whatever and I'll continue to call him a talented but tacky man.

What are Whedon's thoughts on the sexist way his buddy James Gunn treated the female lead of Guardians of the Galaxy? Has he ever tweeted about that? Or does Whedon only tweet about the competition?

I'm so glad other people have noticed these things. I've seen nothing but unconditional love for him for years, so didn't know. I thought TA was great and I'm anticipating AoU like everyone else (not to mention his X-Men run was great), but Whedon himself... bothers me. Or maybe his fans bother me more.

------------

On topic (more), I just saw the clip and have to agree with INC. I don't get sexist from the clip, just out of date and cliched. It was like watching a Sam/Rebecca scene in a rerun of Cheers. Only not as good. :p

I quite like Joss Whedon and I've gotten a lot of happiness and general intellectual satisfaction from Buffy, Angel, Firefly and Dollhouse. I think he's been good for women in Hollywood overall. I think that what he did with Buffy was special.

However, I'm not a fan of his criticisms. In this case it's much worse than when he took a dump on TDK or Watchmen or Prometheus, as it's based off a decontextualized clip. He has no idea, no ****ing idea, maybe he should wait?

As pointed out above by I SEE SPIDEY, hypocrisy in criticism undermines the criticism. There's much worse misogyny in some works Whedon is affiliated with, for example the theatrical poster for The Avengers. Also, his friend James Gunn has an extended track record of virulent misogyny.

That's my outlook as well. I love Joss. I love most, if not all, of his works. His stamp of approval has gotten me to check out several works (Veronica Mars and Runaways, for one).

But his hardcore fans... good lord. We get it, Firefly was brilliant and it was screwed by the network and it was wrongfully cancelled, but you know what? It also got a movie and has gotten several comics, so shut the f*** up, will ya? Jesus. "Ohh, everything he says is scripture and every dump he takes is gold." Enough.

So...what's this clip that's cause such a stir? I tried wading through this discussion but it stretches on for pages and I can't find the clip that started it.

 I have ranted many many times about Gamora in that film so I won't repeat myself and bore people, but needless to say I felt she was horribly handled.

Writers tend to be pretty open about this kind of thing.

It is fairly hilarious to see the amount of backlash against Whedon for not digging a clip.

I wouldn't necessarily call the clip outright sexist or anything but it is a bit of odd dialogue. Basically all of the Chris Pratt's characters responses to business related questions were needlessly sexual comments that would indeed land you in HR for sexual harassment.

Whedon should have waited until after he'd seen the movie to say his remarks.

Why? This is what they decided to put out there to promote hype for the movie, but for some, hype is not their response.

Starlord voice:"Your'e welcome." :sly:

Here to change the subject from this tiny clip which apparently has become such a huge deal to some of you.

Waiting for the complaints now about the CGI or whatever in 3..2..

Its not so much that the CG is bad but there is something about the overall aesthetic to the movie that I find off puting. Everything has blue highlights for some reason. Just doesn't read right to my eye.

Now that I've watched the video I sympathize with Whedon a little more. That video is cringeworthy in its extreme cliche-ness. It's painful to watch, the level of pandering to social norms as an alternative to writing a genuinely good story.

"Did you experiment on animals on you dumb woman? You should have sex with me, and leave the science work to me! I know better, I respect nature, grunt grunt grunt!"

...man that's a bad clip. :funny:

It's just... I can't agree that it's sexist... But it's cliched as all hell get out. I was hoping that Pratt wasn't going to just be Starlord 2.0 for this... Seems I shouldn't have got my hopes up for that.

It can be called "sexist" because the specific cliches that involves harken back to tired old gender roles that were played out decades ago. "Sexist" doesn't necessarily mean that its hateful towards women or something (though it can). In this case just stilted and limiting.

I think it's just rooted in sexist cliches on top of being poorly delivered. Also, am I the only one done with this fratboy-ish mentality protagonist?

Pratt & Howard has a history already and obviously annoyed yet hot for eachother. It's not like random boss - employee encounter.

Classic down to earth good hearted bad boy and pretentious princess wannabe girl.

Nothing sexist there.

Whedon just being a white knight again. He has no problem with Black Widow almost flirting scene with every avenger so far because that's what strong independent women do. Female James Bond. Grabs her man and take him to her cave.:o

I missed this. I am sorry. I adorable you. :ilv:

I think we see way more of the "Dude bro is right over Stuffy Nerds" cliche for sure. When in fact, in real life it's the opposite in my experience. Smart people's advice gets ignored in the face of a populace that has no technical skill or wisdom on various subjects. Not to get political but the information as to WHY going to war in Iraq was a bad idea was out there for all to see if they so chose to do so. But that's just it... People chose to go "with their gut" and well... The rest is history.

I really hope Pratt gets some different roles and isn't pigeon-holed into this dude bro type character forever. I like the guy a lot, he deserves better. I had hoped this role would be different but it's clearly not the case.

The biggest problem with Joss fans is they take on his attitude a bit too much for my taste. I love Buffy, Angel and Firefly. I am a fan of almost all his work. But the guy is pretentious. Which is ok, because he has the wit and charm to pull it off. His fans, not so much.

So I was avoiding the scene, as the film isn't that far off, but the controversy made me too curious. That is not sexist. Is it cliched? Yes. Bad? maybe, though I like it a bit. Like a low rent version of "His Girl Friday", one of my favorite films. But if anyone is taking a shot here, it is scientist, not women.
