Just Reboot TMNT

Just as how people can't seem to grasp the concept that a lot of other TMNT versions were aimed with kids yet still managed to be well written and mature enough for the older audiences. That's been the status quo with the TMNT for a long while, as well as with superheroes in general.

The current Nick series is for kids and is still 1000 times better handled. "It's for kids" has become a straw man argument to defend anything that's poorly done.

And frankly, kids deserve better.

Not to mention, if it's made for kids, why is it trying borrowing so much from the '87 cartoon? Most kids today know either the 2k3 or 2012 series.

Exactly. If this was made for a new generation, this should have just been a live adaptation of the new Nick Toon. That's the version of the Turtles young kids know. They are already for the new generation of Turtles fans. So who the heck was this new movie aimed at?

Meh, we deserved better than Secret of the Ooze when we were kids, but that didn't stop most of us from loving the crap out of it. Heck, same goes for the 80s show in general. There are SO many well-made family movies these days (mostly animated), frankly I think they can afford to have a little light, fun, butt-kicking schlock in their lives. The main thing is they got the Turtles right.

It's not like the 1990 movie was a live action adaptation of the 80s show. In appearance things were closer, but tonally it was worlds darker and grittier. You could make the same argument that the original movie wasn't aimed at kids enough (and in fact many parents did, hence the adjustment made for the sequels).

I didn't see the new movie as strictly trying to adapt the 80s show at all. There are some notes of nostalgia there for the older crowd, but heck...even the new Nick toon brings in elements from the 80s show to appeal to that crowd. I saw a lot of everything in the new movie. A lot of references to various TMNT media.

I think in general Mikey's "airheadedness" being played up a lot more traces back to the 2k3 series, which is actually something I'm not the biggest fan of but accept.

Platinum Dunes have no respect for the franchise. You're fooling yourself if you think the second will be better. If Michael Bay had never opened his mouth about the alien bit, they would have gone through with it in the absence of the internet exploding and that would be the movie in theatres right now.

These are the people that made Fred Krueger a child rapist. They are out to shock the fans on purpose.

Looking forward to seeing (if) people defend the 90's sequels over these sequels. Should be fun.

On another note, this idea that kids deserve this or that comes off more to me as people wanting material that's more geared to them. Kids deserve to be entertained and this material is luckily enough to be dynamic in it's approach. I'd say the exact same thing about Teen Titans Go. There are a bunch of "mature" people watching that show arguing about how dumb it is and that kids deserve better and that the source material has displayed better etc. When in reality it's a matter of something that's bringing kids joy and simply isn't working for them but there is a level of selfishness that won't let it be. I brought up space jam in the other thread; reading the reviews it's the same deal. Folks talking about nonsense script and kids deserving better when I personally couldn't have asked for a more magical experience...as a kid. These grown folks demanding it do more for they themselves.

There is a reason TFprime has been cancelled and retooled into something even more simpler. So that grown men who don't want to watch it anymore can throw tantrums. But what do the kids think of this new nonsense? Do any of them like it better I wonder.

Yes, it was that bad. Really, it wasn't even a live action Turtles film-- it was just another animated film. A reboot wouldn't be unprecedented immediately after Platinum Dunes ruined a Paramount IP. PD's Friday the 13th was so poorly received by fans and critics that Paramount is moving forward with another reboot (allegedly found footage this time). But raking Platinum Dunes over the coals aside; what would you do to reboot TMNT in a few years?

the flim needs to be rebooted but not with those pictures. We basically need them to go back to the original flim and build a sequel on that flim. that's the way to go.

Why would they reboot when they're making more money than they thought they were going to make. To them, they are successful with people.

This movie was a hit....made plenty of money. No need to reboot

pretty much. not agreeing with the premise of this thread in anyway.

Some people just wanna complain

this movie was garbage unless you're a kid and you never seen the original TMNT

I enjoyed the movie....I'm a 32 year old man. I've seen everything TMNT related. People are too closed minded and refuse to be open to new takes on things. Get over it already

EDIT: And all my friends loved the movie as well....

You're not the only one. There are many that have seen every Turtle related thing. And it's accepted by many that the new IDW comics and the Nick Show are both great. Even though they throw in new stuff like reincarnation or making Karai Hamato Yoshi's daughter.

So yeah, we are open to new takes. What many of us don't like, is a movie with a horribly butchered mythology and plothole ridden story.

I didn't think it was butchered...It wasn't perfect, but it got the point across. Who knows, things could be slightly tweaked in the sequel

You know how dumb that sentence sounds right? What age do you think you were when you saw the original TMNT? I'm sure your parents weren't too happy going. lol

I hated secret of the Ooz and Turtles 3.
I wanted better for those too. Thats why they continued to under perform it was turning progressivly into a turd and the New Movie is a Polished ugly as hell turd.

Id be up for a Reboot.

Awful turtle designs
Weak story/script
Miscast actors
Awful director/writers

It needs a do over with actual talent involved.

I feel bad for the fans that didn't get what they wanted with this reboot. I'm one of them but I knew that was going to happen, five years ago when Mirage sold the property. This was always going to be the fallout of the Viacom purchase and TMNT went from being creator owned to a studio controlled IP.

It definitely could have turned out ALOT worse. The blue door script was beyond horrific and they at least had enough sense to trash most of it and start over. I'll take a disposable but harmless film, over one that really trashed the mythology.

Still, it's a shame at what could have been. When Mirage originally announced the reboot back in 2009, the movie that would have came to fruition (had they not sold the franchise), is definitely the film that most seemed to have wanted but didn't get.

I remember this quote by Kevin Eastman:

“Three years ago, I started working on the John Fusco version, which was this awesome, awesome, awesome ‘Batman Begins’ kind of take on the first movie. It was really interesting, but it was maybe a little too edgy for what Paramount wanted. It went through a couple of different versions before Michael Bay took it over and brought in Jonathan Liebesman (‘Wrath of the Titans,’ ‘Battle Los Angeles’) to direct.”

I REALLY hope Fusco's script eventually leaks. I really want to see what eventually we missed out on.

the difference is my parents when they were 8 or 9 didn't have a TMNT to reference from, so it was as new for them then it was for me.

We have a reference now and this movie does it's older fans a huge disservice
