Spider-Man: Reign
Amazing Spider-Man Vol. 1-7 (JMS's run, read the first vol. to see if you'll end up liking the rest of his good portion of his run).

If your going to read "Brand New Day"
I suggest you don't read anything before it.

There's a digital version of the first 40 years of Amazing Spider-Man... get that and enjoy classic Spidey...

If you are going to read Brand New Day, I suggest you don't. :o

And ignoring this post TC, I suggest that as a new Spidey reader you should take a gather at an issue or two of Brand New Day and get your own opinion on it whether your gonna like it or not.

If you want to be a REAL Spider-man fan you have to steal a car and go to every comic book shop you can and track down every single issue of Amazing Spider-man!

Then get in a fight.... then, you'll be a Spider-man fan!:applaud

AND!

If you want to REALLY be a REAL Spider-Man fan you have to remember to capitalize the "M"! ;) :p

Don't listen to these clowns telling you not to pick up the current stuff. "New Ways to Die" is actually very good.

But for the BEST Spidey stories...? Well, you already mentioned 'Death of Gwen Stacy' and 'Kraven's Last Hunt'. I would say pick up 'Sin Eater' by Peter David, look for a reprint of 'The Kid Who Collected Spider-Man'. Look for 'The Child Within' arc, Spectacular Spider-Man # 200 and Amazing Spider-Man #400. For obscure, underrated classics look for 'Spider-Man: Redemption' which involves another Spider-Man called Ben Reilly who took over for a short time and faces off against a twisted version of himself called Kaine. It's a great psychologically deep story, but it's not easy to find so ask your local comic store owner. Look for Paul Jenkins' 'Webspinners' arc which involves Chameleon. That's also a great story will also be equally hard to find, although it is collected. Look for the classic Venom stories by David Michiliene (sp?), Todd McFarlane and Eric Larson. Amazing Spider-Man #300 is definitely worth getting. And look for the classic Hobgoblin stories by Roger Stern, Tom DeFalco and Peter David from the 80's. Peter's first battle with Morlun by JMS in Amazing Spider-Man from a few years ago is also worth checking out.

That should get you started. :applaud

thanks everyone, u helped out a lot

(and sorry, i will use a capital M when spelling Spider-Man now)

Damn straight. :cwink:

Brand new day will be a good jumping on point for you.
Especially if you want to become an ongoing reader but don't know where to start.

Most long time readers find it hard to pick up because of the convoluted plot that overlaps Amazing right now.

I'm trying my best not to spoil it for you....but trust me if you weren't an on going reader before "One More Day". Than it'll be a good time for you to pick up Spidey books and give them a try.

you can go to my blog and There are some pretty good stories down there. my favs. although you just reminded me I have to switch out the death of gwen stacy with back in black. :csad: lol I made an error....and have NO clue how i did that.
each story can be found on the great donald thomas' website in cdisplay format. :yay:

I seriously love that man. (I have a gf so its ok for straight men to say such things.) but if not for him I wouldn't have been able to finish reading cliffhangers that have been on my mind since I was a kid.

Ultimate Spider-Man + JMS' first 2 years of his Spider-Man run + Death of The Stacy's + Spider-Man: Reign.

And I cannot stress that enough.

To that I will add:

Spider-man/Doc Ock Year One
I'm with Stupid
The Last Stand

I started by reading essential spider-man vol 1, 2 and 3 (or you could get the omnibus if you want it in color). I had so much fun reading these stories.

I started reading Brand New Day, and as someone relatively new to spidey, I've enjoyed that as well (the levels of enjoyment have been varied, however).

One thing that I would highly recommend to you to read is "Spider-man Blue" by Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale. I bought this and read it right away and loved it. It's a quick read. I always ask my friends who don't know anything about comic books to sit down and read this story and they love it. My girlfriend is new to comics and reads some of the tpbs that I buy, and Spider-man blue is her favorite.

Ultimate Spider-man vol 1-6, and the JMS/John Romita Jr. run on amazing have already been recommended, and I would highy recommend those as well.

how is that new ways to die series? worth picking up?

The first 200 issues of the flagship Amazing Spider-man title are must read. The first 1-122 issues are some of the greatest Superhero fun ever. Actually it IS the best thing in any media. But what do I know - I'm a Spidey freak! Pick them up in the essential spider-man volumes for cheap.

Beware of 70's camp in the later issues though.

If you want something more - Look for Roger Stern, JM Dematteis, David Michelinie and most recently Mark Millar on the "adjectiveless" Spider-man book.

You can thank me later :woot:

Kraven's Last Hunt is a great choice.

Also get
The Child Within
Son of the Goblin
The Origin of the Hobgoblin

Torment....you will either like or not. Not a lot of middle ground. Ditto for Soul of the Hunter.

I would simply add that the first 251 ASM issues are the best must-read Spidey issues...
