i don’t know if it’s that I am in a different place in life or if passions have changed but lately I find myself rooting against the JL. Specifically, with recent arcs in Titans and Green Arrow, I think some of the writers of “lesser heroes” have been really peeling things back to shine a spotlight on the fact that the JL and especially the trinity really do have an issue with ego and being overly paternalistic to the point of being condescending. Let’s face it, the way the JL shut down the Titans was completely hypocritical. I have been hoping that this would lead to some comeuppance and the JL to be shown wrong, but it appears that isn’t the writer’s intention.
I see a stark divide between heroes who either have never been invited to the JL or who have and have since turned their back on that team, and those who are stalwart members. Characters like Dick Grayson, or Oliver Queen versus characters like Superman, Bruce, WW or Martian Manhunter. I find myself gravitating more toward the former than the latter. While Supes and Bats are 2/3 of a three way tie for my favorite hero, I really get irritated by their smugness that I feel they have as part of the JL. I find the more grass roots guys to be more easy to root for. (And let’s face it, it doesn’t help that for the last few years it does seem like the JL is written as being totally incompetent)
Anyone else see this or have any thoughts? What type of hero do you gravitate to? A Superman or a Green Arrow? A Batman or Nightwing?
