Why did Kal-El return in the astroid-spacecraft (like when he first arrived as a child) as opposed to simply flying?

And why did it take five years to find Krypton and return? What was he doing all that time?

my guess is that he needed the ship in order to cover the great distance from Earth to Krypton. plus, any remains of Krypton would have become irradiated Kryptonite, so the ship would also provide protection.

1) he needs yellow sunlight to charge his body, and give him powers

2) krypton, or whats left of it, would be seriously contaminated with kryptonite.

3) if the remains of krypton were still near a red sun, or the red sun, his powers would be instantly neutralized.

4) he can hold his breath for a long period of time, but sooner or later, Superman needs to breath.

^That makes sense, thanks Superfreak.

Do they have Deleted scenes from his searchings at Krypton?
I would sure like to see that!

Because to Superman he might of been gone for maybe a few weeks to a few months, to people on earth it would be 5 years.

How do you figure that, GarudA? I don't think time moves differently for Kryptonians versus humans, I think they just measure it differently since they aren't subject to same age-limits as humans. That was my impression, at least.

time moves differently in space

From what I have read, while flying through the remains of Krypton, he was exposed to Kryptonite. Thus, he was weakened, explaing why he didn't just land and get out of the ship.

You're referring to his crash-down at the farm? That would make sense.

Okay, I don't totally get it, but I'm starting to wrap my brain around it.

time and space baby, time and space. Space is curved, there are no true straight lines in the universe because of gravity, all gravity. But because time and space are one, time is also curved, which causes relativity problem when travelling great distances.

Then you get into the speed of light stuff. Where the faster an object travels, the slower time passes for anything travelling at that speed. So if Superman is travelling at the speed of light for 1 year (1 year to him, that's what it feel like), 5 years will pass on earth. The theory of relativity is one big philosophical mess.

That's why the best theory on time travel says you have to use a space ship (nothing ground based) because as you move in time, you also move in relative space.

Time is relative, like everything else. It slows down around massive objects lke stars and black holes. The faster you go, the more massive you get (because energy is proportional to mass and you're increasing your energy). Which means the faster you go, the slower time passes around you. But sense you're slowing down as well, from your perspective time is unchanged while the rest of the universe is speeding up. And to the rest of the universe, time is unchanged while you are slowing down.

So, if you travel fast enough, when you get back, time will have passed more quickly for those you left behind then it did for you.

This part I understand.

This part, not so much.

Thanks for trying, though. Physics (I guess that's what this is?) was never my forte.

Superman cant fly in space, nor can he breath in space

At least in the major and more realistic storylines.

This is exactly why I'm glad they chose to take the space scene out of the film. Too many people would have been asking this question.

And, yes, as everyone here has pointed out, it's because of not being around our sun. No sun, no flight, no powers.

I was wondering the same thing, ah question answered

Which is why he was shown doing so in this movie?

No he wasn't, he was holding his breath during the listening post scene.
