Kitten Found Stuffed Inside Marijuana Bong

LINCOLN, NE -- A kitten is recovering after allegedly being stuffed in a bong while its owner smoked marijuana at the same time.

Lincoln investigators said that 20-year-old Acea Schomaker is accused of animal cruelty for the act.

The kitten -- 6-month-old Shadow -- is being treated at a Lincoln animal shelter.

Deputies said they witnessed the animal being trapped inside the homemade bong as it was being smoked.

"I have never seen anything like this before," Lancaster County Chief Deputy Bill Jarrett said.

The bong is made of Plexiglas and is about the size of shoebox.

"It was taped shut so the cat was exposed to large amounts of marijuana smoke," Jarrett said.

Schomaker was wanted on a warrant for possession of marijuana. Deputies found him in his home south of Lincoln.

They said he was smoking the bong when they arrived.

Shoemaker allegedly told deputies the kitten was high strung and needed to be put in the bong to keep it calm.

"The cat appeared to be very lethargic, somewhat in a sleeping state," Jarrett said.

Capital Humane Society officials said they have taken X-rays and done other tests to see if the kitten has any long-term affects from the alleged abuse.

"The individual stated he had done this several times," agent Bob Downey said.

The shelter workers said they are working with the sheriff's office and the county attorney to get custody of the animal so it can be put up for adoption.

"We'll find a home where it will not be subjected to this type of treatment anymore," Downey said.

Schomaker was cited for misdemeanor animal cruelty.

That charge could be upgraded to a felony if the kitten dies or has long-term effects from the alleged abuse.

A misdemeanor conviction could mean up to a year in jail time, a felony conviction would put Schomaker away for up to five years.

It seems that cats get affected by pot. I remember when I worked in the vet's office, the most mellow cat I'd ever seen was owned by these two potheads. Both the people and the cat always smelled strongly of marijuana. It's a fun anecdote to share.

Deputies say man stuffed cat inside 'bong'

A man who apparently tried to mellow out his cat by stuffing her into a homemade bong is facing criminal charges — and catcalls from animal lovers.

Lancaster County Sheriff’s deputies went to the home Acea Schomaker shares with his grandfather at 5700 Saltillo Road Sunday morning on a domestic disturbance call, said Sgt. Andy Stebbing.

Deputies resolved the dispute and left the house, but returned minutes later after discovering there was an arrest warrant on Schomaker for possession of drug paraphernalia, Stebbing said.

When they went back in, he said, the deputies said they saw Schomaker, 20, smoking marijuana through a piece of garden hose attached to a duct-taped, 6-by-12-inch plexiglass box, into which the cat had been stuffed.

“This cat was just dazed,” Stebbing said. “She was on the front seat of the cop car, wrapped in a blanket, and never moved all the way to the humane society.”

Deputies said Schomaker told them the 6-month-old kitten, named Shadow, had been hyper and he was trying to calm her down.

Shadow was taken to the Capital Humane Society, where she was in good shape on Monday, Executive Director Bob Downey said.

“What the human mind doesn’t invent, huh?” Downey said.

Schomaker did not return voice or text messages left on his cell phone by The Associated Press.

He was cited for misdemeanor animal cruelty and taken to Lancaster County Jail on the arrest warrant. He was released after paying a $400 fine.

Now he faces new charges for possession of marijuana and paraphernalia stemming from Sunday.

Stebbing said the animal cruelty charge could be raised to a felony if the cat dies or is found to have suffered injury.

Downey said tests would be done to determine whether the cat suffered lung damage.

“To the eye, the cat looks OK,” he said. “It cowers in the back of its cage like it’s a little bit afraid but, obviously, given the way it’s been treated, that’s not surprising to me at all.”

Alleged kitten bong maker says he's learned a lesson

Acea Schomaker, alleged creator of the oft-Googled “kitten bong,” said Tuesday he has sworn off marijuana.

“Mainly because I’m tired of getting fines for something that I believe in, and I really don’t have the money to try to fight any legal battle on it,” Schomaker, 20, said.

Lancaster County sheriff’s deputies ticketed Schomaker on suspicion of misdemeanor animal cruelty Sunday after catching him smoking pot from a contraption that had his girlfriend’s 6-month-old cat, Shadow, stuffed inside its 12-by-6-inch base.

His girlfriend, Marissa Vieux, also was ticketed on suspicion of animal cruelty because she didn’t try to stop Schomaker, Sgt. Andy Stebbing said.

Schomaker said he knows now that what he did was wrong, but the couple said they were trying to help Shadow, not hurt her.

Vieux said she rescued Shadow about two months ago from friends who had abused the cat. Schomaker said Shadow often would scratch and bite him and Vieux.

Schomaker said he didn’t want to traumatize Shadow by swatting her or squirting water at her, and he didn’t want to take her to an animal shelter because he feared the cat would be euthanized.

Instead, he said, he decided to try putting Shadow in the bong because he had heard that some people calmed their pets by blowing pot smoke in their faces.

“I know for sure this isn’t the first time someone has done this,” he said. “I’m just the first one to get caught.”

Schomaker said he put the cat in the bong three times, all in the past week.

“Every time we took her out, she would pretty much just lay down and proceed to clean herself and act like a stoned person,” he said.

The Sunday incident occurred after the cat bit him on the thumb, he said.

Sheriff’s deputies caught Schomaker using the bong while they were responding to a domestic disturbance call at the house he shares with Vieux and his grandfather.

Schomaker said the bong was built in such a way that the cat did not get immersed in smoke to the extent some might believe.

He said animal specialists lectured him about why what he did was cruel; he said he learned a lesson.

Schomaker said he thinks marijuana is harmless to humans but said it wasn’t safe to expose a small animal with no choice in the matter to marijuana smoke.

“If you just send an animal back to the humane society, if they see it’s aggressive, they’re going to put it down,” he said. “I wanted to give this cat a chance at having a home rather than living in a cage or being dead.”

Bob Downey, executive director at the Capital Humane Society, said he is “ultraconfident” Shadow will find a home. He said the shelter fielded calls from people nationwide, as well as from Lincoln, looking to adopt the cat.

He said he wants to make sure he has legal authority to put Shadow up for adoption before doing so. After that, he said, he expects he’ll find a local home for the cat.
