Could just be me...but so far almost every movie i've seen has just been "meh" Lots of buzz and hype around some of them only to fail in expectation.

It could just be me...maybe i'm jaded. Or maybe I just want something more than a "good" movie. Maybe I want a great movie. I know it all comes down to personal taste...but dang it, last year there were plenty of great films I gladly forked over the money to go see...but this year i've felt like i've done nothing but waste my money on mere decent film experiences.

Is it just me? Am I setting my expectations to an impossible height? Or are there others who feels that despite all the hype surrounding this year and films, there really hasn't been anything yet that could be called great?

(Don't fail me Star Trek and Terminator!!)

I just think it was such a high coming off of 2008... that it was bound to be such a low in 2009. None of the movies this year are really on my radar as MUST see. I'll probably watch the big films to pass the time... but as of now it all looks pretty "meh" so far.

It is only mid-March, there's usually not many good movies released at this time of year. What movies that came out before mid-March last year did you think were really great?

Exactly! January and February are dumping grounds for crap and horror films. As for March, besides Watchmen, what else has there been to choose from?

Close this thread and reopen in September.

I believe that this is going to be one of the worst years in cinema-history. We are undoubtably going to get some good/great movies this year. But, this year is ultimately going to suck. This feels like 2005 all over again, where the fanboys only got one really great movie, and I'm sure you all know which one that is.

Watchmen is the only movie that's come so far I've cared about. So it's off to a good start for me.

Yeah, but not a great start for moviegoers everywhere. The film wasn't all that successful with a large minority. But, like 'GhostPoet', this year I'm really hoping that 'Terminator: Salvation' prospers. I don't really care about 'Star Trek', right at the moment, but I'm sure I'll be heavily interested in seeing it when it comes out. As I've pretty much seen every J.J. Abrams films in theatres. And I rarely find myself going to see movies in theatres, I usually wait for the DVD to come out.

2009 reminds of 2006 where it was just..a slow year all together. I mean there were good movies but they were far and between.

As much as I look forward to Star Trek and Terminator Salvation, it's not like "I've been waiting for YEARS for these movies".

However, with mainstream movies, I can't wait for Where the Wild Things Are.

I guess I could just care less about other moviegoers.

Yeah, that was one that I just discovered yesterday. Although, I have to edmit, I haven't been waiting to see it forever. After seeing them screw up such movies as 'The Cat in the Hat' and 'How the Grinch Stole Christmas', I wasn't really anticipating seeing them ruin another one of my favourite childrens book. However, now that everything's back on-track and now that 'Warner' has it, I really can't wait to see the film. And, as I said in the thread yesterday, once I saw that test footage, the photos and the new poster, the movie immediately bumped up to my #2 most anticipated list, because I've been waiting to see a movie like 'Terminator: Salvation' for a long time now(technically, ever since I saw those first 10 or so minutes of 'T2' with the future warfare).

Hmm... well seeing as Gran Torino was only released here this February, I would consider it a good year overall if that turns out to be as good as it gets this year :hehe:

Yeah, but dude, look at it like this: we get at least one or more movies every week(usually Fridays) in a full year. And so far, how many good movies have we had in that time?

Yeah, I haven't seen many films since 2009 started. Watchmen, Taken, Coraline, and Gomorra are the only movies I've seen this year. But there seems to be some good ones coming out. Particularly comedies, such as I Love You, Man, Observe and Report, and Funny People. And of course the blockbusters.

You notice every year the big movies are adapations or sequels to earlier properties. We never look forward to original things anymore. I think Pixar is the only studio that comes up with their own in house stuff that we wait with baited breath on. Remember the 80s...Ghostbusters, Goonies, etc. Original ideas that when you saw teaser posters were all, "man, that looks pretty crazy."

see, there are some advantages to Ireland getting some films months after the States. So far in 2009, I've had two films that I would give 5 star ratings to (Gran Torino, The Wrestler), and I also rated Slumdog Millionaire highly. Personally, it's been a great year for films here so far

But no, I agree and I can't look at those films in this light as they're technically 08 films. So far the only true 09 films I've enjoyed and ranked highly was Watchmen. And there's very little to look forward to this summer compared to last year, but perhaps that was because we were spoiled for choice last summer and one film in particular stood out as one of the best summer blockbusters in years (cough). No film will come that close this year, though I've high hopes for Terminator and, to a lesser extent, Public Enemies, but others, like Star Trek and Transformers, hold no interest for me

So yeah, looking at it like that, it's been disappointing so far and the future isn't looking bright. Still, it's probably too early to tell as this time of year rarely has many decent films, being after Oscar season and before blockbuster season. Who knows, maybe an interesting Fall line-up will make up for what will probably be an ultimately disappointing summer and might give some hope for 09

i kept hearing that 2008 was the 21st Century's version of 1982, where awesome mainstream movies came out.

It's a cycle.

I have to add that I think 2007 was a stronger year with indie/dramas, moreso than 2008.

Haven't seen one single movie this year so far. Nothing looks interesting, and honestly the summer offerings doesn't look very exiting either. Last summer felt like a small improvement, mostly thanks to some surprisingly good superhero movies, The Dark Knight and Iron Man. I doubt this summer will match that. Although I hope that at least Pixar can deliver as usual.

Its March.

The only movies I've seen from 2009 are Friday the 13th and Watchmen. All the other movies I saw this year were released in 2008 (Frost/Nixon, Revolutionary Road, The Reader, Slumdog Millionaire, Gran Torino, Doubt and The Wrestler).

A bunch of us were discussing this after a commentary recording a few weeks back. We noted that this summer seems really without any "blockbuster" films except Wolverine, Terminator and Transformers :csad:
