Western release confirmed for new Professor Layton series.

Lady-Layton-West-2017-Ann.jpg

Lady Layton: The Millionaire Ariadone’s Conspiracy, announced for 3DS, iOS, and Android earlier today at Level-5 Vision 2016, is targeting a 2017 release in the west, Level-5 International America confirmed. In Japan it is targeting a spring 2017 release.

Additionally, Level-5 announced that the Professor Layton series has sold more than 15.5 million units worldwide.

Here is an overview Lady Layton, via Level-5 IA:
As one of Level-5’s masterpieces, the Professor Layton series of puzzle adventure games has sold more than 15.5 million units worldwide to date. Its newest official sequel, Lady Layton: The Millionaire Ariadone’s Conspiracy — available on Nintendo 3DS/Android/iOS — was announced to be released in Spring 2017 in Japan.
Not only will the main character switch from “Professor Layton” (Hershel Layton) to “Kat” (Katrielle Layton), many of its characters will be brand new. The story will focus less on dynamic problem-solving and more on solving multiple mystery cases observed in the everyday lives of Londoners, which will bring a faster tempo and more comical tone to the series. It will be more familiar — and funnier — than ever, while maintaining an adventurous quality. The creators of the puzzles and brain-teasers, the core element of the series, will also be new.
Please look forward to the new Professor Layton series, targeting a Western release in 2017.

Layton’s Mystery Journey: Katrielle and The Millionaire’s Conspiracy latest trailer
Published 2 hours ago. 3 comments.

3DS and smartphone game due out on July 20.
Laytons-Mystery-Journey-Trailer_04-17-17.jpg

Level-5 has released the latest trailer for Layton’s Mystery Journey: Katrielle and The Millionaire’s Conspiracy.

The upcoming Layton game follows a “high-speed comical puzzle-solving story.” Whereas previous Layton games followed a story where one grand mystery was solved, Layton’s Mystery Journey follows a story where you solve the mysteries behind small incidents occurring in London one after the other. It stresses a “more everyday and familiar feeling,” while being filled with dramatic developments and elements that will make you laugh.

The gameplay itself will see players move around town while investigating various locations, talking with others and examining items to find mysteries and hints, and solving various puzzles, all of which are original to the game.

Here’s a brief overview of the story:

Katrielle is a “jack-of-all-trades and mystery-solving detective” who solves strange incidents that occur in London. She’ll take on any job, from looking for someone’s pet cat to exposing the criminal in a murder case. Her bizarre ideas for solving cases are gradually becoming a topic, and she’s starting to receive various cases.

While she originally started working as a detective to find her father Hershel Layton who suddenly disappeared, she is working to solve a variety of mysteries in town in the course of it. As she is pursuing new requests each day, the search for her father Hershel is not progressing.

Katrielle has an assistant to help her in her deductions. That assistant’s name is Sharo. A dog who can somehow talk. So then, what kind of hard to understand mysteries await Katrielle?

Layton’s Mystery Journey: Katrielle and The Millionaire’s Conspiracy is due out for 3DS in Japan, and for iOS and Android worldwide, on July 20. It will support Japanese, English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, Dutch, and Korean languages.

Level-5 has released new information and screenshots of Layton’s Mystery Journey: Katrielle and The Millionaires’ Conspiracy detailing the game’s “Episode 01” story, two of the “Seven Millionaires of London” characters, and more.

Get the information below.
■ Episode 01

Laytons-Mystery-Journey_05-18-17_001.jpg

“Episode 01” is titled “Clockwork Sweets.”
One of the hands of the clock on the clock tower Big Ben, which is said to be a symbol of London, has been stolen. A police officer patrolling the area was able to confirm that the clock hand was safe as of around 11:50 p.m. the night before. It was discovered that the clock hand was missing at 6:00 a.m. the next morning.

The following day, Ambassador Melarco will visit London from a neighboring country. At that time, he is to scheduled to receive a pendant that resembles Big Ben as proof of goodwill. However, if Big Ben is not in its complete state at that time, it will affect the country’s good name.

That being said, the clock hand must be recovered before the press conference begins.

Laytons-Mystery-Journey_05-18-17_002.jpg

It is at the scene of the crime that Scotland Yard inspector Aspoiro requests that Katrielle investigates the incident.

■ Characters

There are seven characters that make up the “Millionaires” referred to in the game’s subtitle, known as the “Seven Millionaires of London.” Here, we will introduce two of the seven millionaires.

Ridley Fremens

Laytons-Mystery-Journey_05-18-17_003.jpg

The female mayor of London. She has a tough personality. As a politician, she is a woman who respects order.

She seems to be restraining herself, in some respects.

She plans to liven up the London “Riverside Festival.” She succeeded her father as one of the millionaires.

Clerk Gospec

Laytons-Mystery-Journey_05-18-17_004.jpg

A multi-millionaire living in London. He is 65 years-old. He manages a number of recreational facilities such as movie theaters and the like.

The Rabbit Star Theater also belongs to Gospec’s company. After hearing a rumor from Fremens, he takes interest in Katrielle and requests that she investigate and solve an incident that occurred in his theater.

Yanchatta Brothers (Non-Millionaires)

Laytons-Mystery-Journey_05-18-17_005.jpg

The Yanchatta Brothers are important characters that appear in Episode 01. The 27 year-old twins consist of older brother Marc, who works as a mechanic on Big Ben, and the younger brother Reggie, who is a confectioner at London’s Yanchatta Confectionery.

■ Puzzles

Here are some of the puzzles you will challenge in Episode 01. All of the puzzles that appear in this game are “completely original,” so fans who enjoy solving puzzles should look forward to release.

■ Game Flow

The basic flow of the game sees players investigate incidents in various places, examine “suspicious” places with the magnifying glass, and gather information that is key to solving incidents while also collecting “Insight Coins,” “Puzzles,” and “Collectibles.”

—If you examine an area where the magnifying glass changes to orange, you can talk to residents, use “Insight Coins” to see puzzle hints, and reveal puzzles.

Laytons-Mystery-Journey_05-18-17_009.jpg

—You can zoom in on places where the magnifying glass turns orange. By doing this, you can see hints that were otherwise hidden.

Laytons-Mystery-Journey_05-18-17_010.jpg

—When the magnifying glass gets smokey, it’s a sign that there is a hidden “Collectible” to be found.

Laytons-Mystery-Journey_05-18-17_011.jpg

—The magnifying glasses at the upper right on the bottom screen shows the number of investigation points required to progress the story.

Laytons-Mystery-Journey_05-18-17_012.jpg

—Use the series’ familiar “Bag” element to check the information you’ve gathered and re-challenge puzzles you’ve already solved.

Laytons-Mystery-Journey_05-18-17_013.jpg

Each game in the Layton series features “mini-games” that expand the scope of gameplay as you progress through the game. Layton’s Mystery Journey features a new mini-game called “The Ideal Dinner.”

It sees players listen to the requests of clients, feel out what they like by getting information from those concerned, and then provide the client with their ideal dinner course of hors d’oeuvres, soup, a main course, and dessert. The clients and cookery available to you will increase as you progress through the story.

“Episode 02” is titled “Song of A Certain Love: Riverside Festival.”
The big Riverside Festival in London was about to begin. It is an event where two young people confess their love from the opposite sides of River Thames. According to the legend that became the origin of this event, there was once a man and woman suffering from unrequited love, and after confessing that love on the opposite sides of the river, each met an unnatural death.
However, during the week of the Riverside Festival, an incident occurs where two young people are really killed on the opposide sides of the river just ahead of the “Riverside Confession Show” on the last day of the event.
The town is in an uproar, but ironically since the scene of the death was so close the legend, it made the festival more exciting as a result.

Level-5 CEO Talks Studio Ghibli And Professor Layton’s Success In The West . July 10, 2017 . 9:30am

Level-5’s CEO Akihiro Hino recently spoke about what it’s like working with Studio Ghibli, as well as his thoughts on why the Professor Layton series is so appealing to western audiences.

5 comments Read >

This year will see a few new game releases from Japanese developer Level-5, including a new title in the Professor Layton series as well as Ni no Kuni 2. The developer’s CEO, Akihiro Hino, recently spoke with Glixel at this year’s E3, during which he discussed many topics, including what it’s like to work with Studio Ghibli, a company which usually produces animated films as opposed to video games. In addition, Hino also touched on the popularity of the Professor Layton series and what makes it so appealing to audiences in the west.

Glixel: Were there difficulties involved in interfacing with Studio Ghibli, a company that usually makes animated movies rather than games?Hino: Working with Studio Ghibli wasn’t difficult, to be honest. They’re so good at putting that emotion and feeling into the movie characters – the whole “acting” aspect. That’s something games don’t usually have. They’re a lot better at it than our company. By working with them, we were able to learn the ropes and really “level up” on showing emotions through characters in our games.

Level-5 has made a lot of Japanese role-playing games of varying types, such as Dark Cloud, but it wasn’t until Professor Layton that you had a game that really caught on with Western audiences. Why do you think that is?
When we created Layton, it was aimed at Japanese consumers. But we took a lot of elements from European animation and movies during development. We studied those color palettes and did it in that style. So, there is this really fantastic world, and it appeals to a lot of people across cultures, not just in Japan.

Does it frustrate you sometimes that Professor Layton has remained so popular while some of your JRPGs have remained niche, at least in the States?
I mean, these games are focused for Japan, so it does have that kind of feel to it. With Dark Cloud, we were trying to make an original fantasy world, but Rogue Galaxy was more on the realistic side, since it’s a sci-fi game. So, maybe that fantasy feel that people associate with Level-5 was lacking compared to our other games, so that might have been why Rogue Galaxy was less successful. To me, Layton is a perfect example of that fantasy world coming alive, and that’s why it’s been able to be so successful over the years.

To read the rest of the interview with Hino, you can go here.

Layton’s Mystery Journey: Katrielle and the Millionaires’ Conspiracy will release for iOS and Android devices on July 20th. The Nintendo 3DS version will also release on July 20th in Japan, with North America and Europe getting it on the 3DS sometime in the latter half of 2017. Ni no Kuni 2: Revenant Kingdom will release for the PlayStation 4 and PC on November 10th, 2017.

Level-5 has released new information and screenshots of Layton’s Mystery Journey: Katrielle and The Millionaires’ Conspiracy detailing the game’s “Episode 03” story and characters, as well as two new mini-games.
Get the information below.
? Episode 03
Laytons-Mystery-Journey_07-13-17_001.jpg
In “Episode 03,” an incident occurs at a movie screening where the millionaires of London such as Mayor Fremens and Clerk Gospec have gathered.
The movie being shown at the screening is a spectacle called “Submarine Attack of Love.” Its synopsis is as follows: “A number of incidents occur in a luxurious passenger boat boarded by two lovers. At the climax, the pair are in a desperate situation as their boat is sinking. However, it is at that time that their boat suddenly transforms into a submarine. Then they both confirm their love for each other and romantically kiss.” Many spectators came to the venue to get a glimpse of the “kiss scene on the most romantic deck” that everyone is talking about.
But in the movie that was screened, the ending came without a kiss scene. Katrielle, who was visiting the venue, will seek out the criminal who cut and “stole” the kiss scene.
Laytons-Mystery-Journey_07-13-17_002.jpg
? Characters
The following characters are suspected of “stealing” the kiss scene in Episode 03. They are the “Submarine Attack of Love” director, the same movie’s editorial technician, the movie theater’s projection technician, and the hill myna bird kept in the theater’s projection room.
Harry Gilmont
Laytons-Mystery-Journey_07-13-17_003.jpg
The director of “Submarine Attack of Love.” 45 years old. He was once a low-selling director who only filmed maniac movies. He became a popular director in recent years. He has a passion for movies.
Harper Chanploo

Amon Tread

The projection technician at Rabbit Star Theater. 24 years old. He has a dull appearance, but is an excellent technician. He is a machine otaku who especially loves visual equipment and gives a name to each machine.
Priske (Hill Myna Bird)

A hill myna bird that speaks various broken phrases. He is being kept at the Rabbit Star Theater’s projection room.
? Puzzles
Here are some of the puzzles you will challenge in Episode 03. It should be noted that some of the screenshots show answers to the puzzles, so those who would like to solve each puzzle on their own may not want to look. Additionally, Level-5 has confirmed that “Daily Puzzle Delivery” will return, which allows the player to download a new puzzle every day for a year following the game’s release.

Laytons-Mystery-Journey_07-13-17_008.jpg

? Mini-Games
We previously covered the “Ideal Dinner” mini-game playable in Layton’s Mystery Journey, but today we’ll look at the “Accessory Shop” and “Bumpy Labyrinth” mini-games.
Accessory Shop

The goal of the Accessory Shop mini-game is to sell out by placing “wanted items” along the route of the shop interior that customers walk.
From the entrance, the customer will move along the shortest route towards their “wanted item.” (If there are multiple routes of the same distance, the customer will go straight, then turn right.) If there is a “might as well buy this, too” item along that route, they will purchase that as well. It is good to let customers pass through the front of the selves in order to get a purchase. You will clear the stage when everything is sold out. Look at the customer’s information and aim to sell out by skillfully placing the items.
Bumpy Labyrinth

Bumpy Labyrinth is a mini-game in which you lead Katrielle’s human language-speaking dog assistant Sherl to the goal. With one move, Sherl moves straight ahead until he reaches dead end, so you will adjust the stopping points using the “Bumpy Switches” that lift the labyrinth floors up and down. If you reach the goal within the set shortest number of movements, you will achieve a “Perfect Clear.”
While you will aim to reach the goal using the required number of movements, there will also be mechanisms such as jumps and arrows that force a certain direction of movement.
Layton’s Mystery Journey: Katrielle and The Millionaires’ Conspiracy is due out for 3DS in Japan, and iOS and Android worldwide on July 20. It will support eight languages: Japanese, English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, Dutch, and Korean. The 3DS version will be released in western territories this fall.

Layton’s Mystery Journey: Katrielle and the Millionaires’ Conspiracy will launch for 3DS in North America and Europe on October 6, Level-5 announced.

Here’s an overview of the game, via Level-5:

The Nintendo 3DS version of the game includes more puzzles than any game in the Layton series thus far, and what’s more, bonus puzzles will be available to download daily for one year, starting from launch day. With additional minigames to round out the package, puzzle fans will find plenty to keep their brains occupied as they explore the charming and visually rich world of Layton’s Mystery Journey: Katrielle and the Millionaires’ Conspiracy.
The story this time begins with Katrielle setting up the Layton Detective Agency on Chancer Lane, determined to prove her worth and hoping that the exposure will help her to uncover clues regarding her missing father’s whereabouts. Whizzing around London on her trusty bicycle, solving case after unlikely case, Katrielle will become embroiled in a quizzical quest that eventually leads to her unwitting discovery of the Millionaires’ Conspiracy. However, she’s not alone in her endeavours – a young Gressenheller student by the name of Ernest Greeves joins the agency as her assistant, and the team quickly grows to three when Sherl, a talking dog, becomes Katrielle’s first client and subsequently a trusty sidekick.
With the intuitive, Touch Screen-based gameplay that fans know and love, Layton’s Mystery Journey: Katrielle and the Millionaires’ Conspiracy is as easy to pick up and play as any of its predecessors, and can be enjoyed on any system in the Nintendo 3DS family, including the recently-released New Nintendo 2DS XL. Layton diehards, casual puzzle-solvers and newcomers alike will quickly become immersed in the brain-teasing adventure as they help Katrielle discover clues, solve puzzles and ultimately deduce the truth. Fashion-conscious players can also redecorate the agency and dress Katrielle in various different outfits to suit the case at hand.
With the most puzzles ever included in a Layton game, a colourful cast of new characters, a hatful of humorous dialogue and an intriguing new storyline, it’s time to say hello to a new heroine and a new era for the Layton series! Will Katrielle and her friends ever be able to find her missing father?
Layton’s Mystery Journey: Katrielle and the Millionaires’ Conspiracy launched worldwide for iOS and Android in July, as well as for 3DS in Japan.

Plus, some information about Level-5's other plans.

A new Professor Layton game is planned for release in summer 2018, according to the September issue of License Global magazine, which features an interview with Level-5 Abby senior vice president of marketing and licensing Simon Waldron.

Additionally, the latest issue of Total Licensing Magazine reports that a television anime series based on the Professor Layton is in development for a 26-episode broadcast in 2018.

Outside of the Professor Layton series, Waldron offered information about plans for Level-5’s other franchises in License Global:

Inazuma Eleven
Level-5 is currently planning to reboot its classic video game property Inazuma Eleven (Editor’s Note: Though not specifically mentioned, it is likely referring to Inazuma Eleven: Ares). The rebooted franchise, which is grounded in soccer (or football, depending on where you hail from in the world), will retell the original story in a slightly altered way and be available on “Nintendo platforms.” As a sports-driven game, Level-5 will aim to secure traditional licensing partners spanning apparel and footwear, as well as publishing. The company is also developing a suite of anime content to coincide with the game and is currently looking at additional digital elements such as digital stickers to tell the brand’s story.

Yo-kai Watch
For Yo-kai Watch, Level-5 is currently preparing to premiere season three of the TV series, which will broadcast across Europe and North America in early 2018, and will be supported further by a raft of new toys, publishing, and more. The company is also releasing a new Yo-kai Watch video game this fall (Editor’s Note: This is likely referring to Yo-kai Watch 2: Psychic Specters) to coincide with stories from the upcoming season.

The Snack World
Additionally, Level-5 recently launched a new video game property in Japan, titled Snack World. The new game features physical, collectible pieces that interact with the game by enabling new challenges, adding new powers, and more. Looking ahead to 2018 and 2019, Level-5 hopes to introduce the brand to its European partners (Editor’s Note: This is a European magazine) in order to develop a robust consumer products program similar to its model for Yo-kai Watch.
