Just got a new laptop for xmas. First time having one. There is a button that turns a fan on. Should I have this fan on always or only when the laptop is getting hot?

I clicked the fan on, my legs are now cold. But I don't want mr laptop to overheat.

What laptop do you have? I have never heard of a laptop that has a user-controlled fan, they are normally controlled automatically by temperature sensors.

If it really is button controlled, then the only way to be sure the laptop will never overheat is to keep the fan running all the time, though they are pretty resilient.
