Programs for new laptop

Recently I got an ASUS laptop, which isn't very fancy and it is to replace my aging PC (which I'm using less and less). Unfortunately, I'll need to find many of the essential programs, such as a good DVD player program since I don't like Windows Media too much. Is there a good freeware for a DVD player program on the net? I'd hate having to pay for every application on the new laptop. Thanks.

Raiden, you need VLC Player. It plays everything.
