Variety is reporting that Lionsgate has hired Noble Jones to write a new version of American Psycho, based on the Bret Easton Ellis novel. Jones was previously a second-unit director for The Social Network.

The book, which was previously turned into a film in 2000 featuring Batman star Christian Bale, is described as follows:

In American Psycho, Bret Easton Ellis imaginatively explores the incomprehensible depths of madness and captures the insanity of violence in our time or any other. Patrick Bateman moves among the young and trendy in 1980s Manhattan. Young, handsome, and well educated, Bateman earns his fortune on Wall Street by day while spending his nights in ways we cannot begin to fathom. Expressing his true self through torture and murder, Bateman prefigures an apocalyptic horror that no society could bear to confront.

I despise Lionsgate...not only does this not need a re-make...it'll probably be a BAD re-make at that.

This is the first time I feel like a remake has been announced with the sole intention of pissing people off.

The movie barely came out 11 years ago...

The original is so good , I can't imagine this getting past the script stage.

TROLOLOLOLOLOL

Really???

No. Just no.

There is no reason for this. The original is fairly new and its not lacking in anyway. What can they possibly improve by remaking it?

Replace the Walkman with an iPad, Bateman has a Twitter and FB page, have him listen to Lady Gaga, etc. :whatever: Oh god...

... 11 years ago for Christ sake.

... no.... just no

If this horrible idea does actually get made haha I feel bad for the poor sap who has to fill in Christian's shoes

Couldn't agree more. The film is not only great, containing in my opinion's Bale's best performance, but it's a damn near perfect adaptation of the original text. What could they possibly change? Why on earth is a remake necessary?

And putting Bateman and his story in modern day...NO. American Psycho is very much a work of the 1980s. It works perfectly for that time period. Goddamnit, this is terrible.

If they want to remake a work of Ellis, someone needs to get on Less than Zero, and make it less like John Hughes' Less than Zero.

But this? What in the blue **** are these people thinking?

I've never seen a role so totally owned by an actor as Bale owns Bateman. Unless this is a sequel with Bale as Bateman in his 50s, may God have mercy on the new actor and us all.

Someone go and adapt Lunar Park if they need a Patrick Bateman fix.

I just can't see how this can work besides some superficial changes to make it modern..

As a guy who usually doesn't ask this with remakes, this finally has me asking it:

Why? American Psycho came out at the right time, and was shocking enough to gain popularity with people. Also, I'm pretty sure the movie was pretty faithful for the novel, so there isn't much more you can do with it on that part either. Plus, AP didn't set the world on fire Box Office wise either. Lionsgate must be desperate.

Hollywood must really be running out of ideas, remaking movies that aren't even considered old yet. This is becoming almost as annoying as all those subpar 3D films that they're rushing out.

Shenanigans. Purely and simply to shenanigan.

And I'm coming to your movie awards whether you like it or not. :o

What a horrible idea. The original is one of my all time favorite films. Not to mention it came out only eleven years ago...
