Live-Action ‘Death Note’ Series In Development With ‘Stranger Things’ Creators

Huh. This…could actually work.

What really killed the last adaptation is that:

-It wasn’t done as a series to allow the story and mystery to unfold gradually. Doing it as a film really killed the pacing.
-The director didn’t understand the source material and wasn’t the right person to direct it.
-Wrong tone, premise and atmosphere.
-Really miscast.

I think the things that could really translate to a series like this are the mystery and how it gradually unfolds, the tone and the horror elements, particularly with the kills and the creeping dread. One of the things Stranger Things has always been really good about, and one of the most engaging elements, is slowly revealing the mystery behind a particular threat and the main characters trying to solve and stop it. The two parties, both good and evil, playing a game of cat and mouse in a race against time to try and best the other before the other bests them, and the tension that comes with that. This past season finale definitely had that in spades.

And, as has been shown with this season’s villain, they can definitely do a character who justifies to himself his killings with his own twisted philosophical bent and worldview on eliminating humankind. Transplant that character to this series, minus the powers, and he definitely wouldn’t feel out of place.

Also, a series like this definitely needs a big budget and a cinematic eye to pull off the tone and atmosphere. I am definitely not worried about that.

Another thing that Stranger Things has been really good about across-the-board his casting. They pretty much nailed that every single time. That could bode pretty well for this.

I think what I am most curious about is who they are actually going to get to write and direct. They did say it’s going to be under the Duffer Brothers’ new production company and not being directly written or directed by them. That’s going to be the clincher for me.

Yeah it seems like the director wanted to make a horror/action movie. "So the characters just die? That's boring... Let's make Final Destination with demons. And we can't have our lead be a bad guy."

I'm also not sure how much the Duffer brothers will be involved, since they're working on Stranger Things season 5 and a spin-off. I just hope it turns out better than Cowboy Bebop. (And that awful Netflix Death Note movie of course)

A longtime fan of the manga and anime series, Meguid, who speaks fluent Japanese and has previously lived in Tokyo, is taking on Death Notehaving worked with the Duffer brothers on another Upside Down Pictures development project for Netflix. She is a writing consultant on their series adaptation of Stephen King and Peter Straub’s novel The Talisman.

The original Death Note focuses on a bright teenager who discovers a mysterious black notebook that gives him supernatural power over life and death, the latter caused by writing a person’s name in the book. The teen becomes intoxicated with power as he decides to cleanse the world of undesirables, as a law enforcement team tries to stop him. Netflix made a film adaptation in 2017, but the series will be an entirely new take on the original IP.

Abdel-Meguid also wrote on Hulu’s upcoming adaptation of The Devil in the White City. She got her start as an actress and musician in London before turning to screenwriting and graduating from AFI in 2018. She is repped by, Rain, Paradigm and Jackoway Austen Tyerman.

How about actually casting an Asian actor as Light this time?

Also not make Light a freaking wet noodle. In the manga, Light was a mastermind, incredibly intelligent. He was a sociopath yes, but he meticulously thought out his plans to a T. He and L were in an epic chess match against each other.

But like L is a sociopath with a god complex. He really believes he's remaking the world for the better. He's not doing it to impress a girl.

It's hard for me to trust showrunners on projects like this. They talk a big game, but their results tend to be mediocre. Case in point, Cowboy Bebop.
