It is pretty weird but also yes understandable that for empowering, enabling even radical change you do need to have, get some level of trust/support for longtime standard status quo. Republicans have been in power for a lot of the last decades, so have Democrats for as long, you can't just ignore how bad, let alone untrustworthy and/or counterproductive a lot of the policies have been for that long.

I don't think damaging/discrediting Trump will itself do much to directly increase trust in government but for left doing so against major opponent/alternative would be pretty needed preliminary matter. And it does need to be some big personal flaw rather than just he's rich or even he's rich and he pays low taxes which most people are not alienated by.
