‘Locke & Key’: Newcomer Cast As Tyler Locke, Danny Glover Co-Stars In Hulu Pilot
Up-and-comer Jack Mulhern, in his first casting following college, has been cast as co-lead Tyler Locke, the oldest son of Rendell and Nina and a protective older brother to his siblings, in Locke & Key, Hulu’s one-hour horror/fantasy drama adaptation of the IDW comic by Joe Hill and artist Gabriel Rodriguez. Additionally, Danny Glover (Lethal Weapon movies) will co-star in the pilot from Hill, Carlton Cuse and IDW Entertainment.

After his dad is murdered, Tyler (Mulhern) has to grow up quickly and wrestles with being a teenager and filling his father’s shoes as man of the house. Tyler’s life is even more complicated after discovering his ancestral family home has magical keys that give him a vast array of powers and abilities. In the 2011 Fox pilot, the role was played by Jesse McCartney.

Glover will play Joe Ridgeway, the eccentric English Teacher at Matheson Academy. After the gruesome murder of their father Rendell, the Locke family moves to Matheson. Joe becomes a mentor to the Locke children and a friend to Nina, but he also knows some of the tragic secrets Rendell kept from his family.

Sources say Hulu executives, including new chief content officer Joel Stillerman (who launched The Walking Dead on AMC) and senior vp Craig Erwich — who greenlit the pilot — wanted to pick up the drama but new CEO Randy Freer (who joined in October) had the final say and insisted on bypassing the drama about a mother (Frances O'Connor) who moves her family into a haunted house after the patriarch is brutally murdered. Sources say Freer ultimately did not like the show after sources say Hulu paid to keep the writers' room open long after the pilot. Seven scripts have already been completed. Hulu declined comment.

'Locke & Key' TV Series Reportedly Picked Up by Netflix


Despite the fact that Hulu passed on the highly-touted Locke & Key TV series, it looks as though the project has found a second life over at rival streaming service, Netflix.

According to a report from That Hashtag Show, Netflix has picked up the Carlton Cuse produced series after the pilot was rejected at Hulu nearly two months ago.

Based on the IDW comic by Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez, Locke & Key seemed nearly guaranteed for pickup at Hulu following a 2017 pilot order. The combination of It director Andy Muschietti helming the pilot and Lost scribe Carlton Cuse producing made for an all-star creative team, but new Hulu CEO Randy Freer wasn't keen on moving forward with the series.

Following a rollercoaster eight years in which multiple outlets attempted to bring IDW's beloved comic Locke and Key to the big and small screen, Netflix is moving forward with the series.

Two months after Netflix was reported to be near a deal to pick up the drama after Hulu's surprising pilot pass, the former has officially ordered Locke and Key to series. The first season will consist of 10 hourlong episodes. Netflix will recast the series.

As previously announced, Netflix is redeveloping and recasting the Hulu take. As part of the creative changes, Meredith Averill (The Good Wife) has boarded Netfilx's Locke and Key as a co-showrunner alongside Carlton Cuse. Aaron Eli Coleite has also boarded as an exec producer and did a rewrite on the pilot episode alongside comic creator Joe Hill. The Hulu pilot take was originally penned by Hill and Cuse. A new director to replace Andy Muschietti (It) has not yet been announced. Muschietti is busy working on It 2 and was no longer available to direct the Netflix take. He and sister Barbara Muschietti will remain credited as exec producers on the series. The Netflix series will be entirely recast.

Nice to get some new casting news. Feels like we hadn't heard much about this one in awhile.
 
Anybody finish the first season yet? I know nothing of the source material and while the first two episodes didn't really grab I really starting loving this once it got to the third episode. I thought the kids were pretty fantastic as well as the adults, especially the supporting cast. The only thing I wasn't sure on at first was the villain, but I started liking her a lot more as the show went along and man with that ending how can you not be excited for Season 2? I at least hope we get another season of this show, because it's very enjoyable.

Same here, I didn't know the book.
I like the theme, a strange house, magic keys and doors.
I had a small deja vu feelings after watching The Haunting of Hill House and The House with a Clock in its Walls.
