Comics looking for somewhere to view the comics

Go to www.talesofwonder.com and buy 40 Years of X-men for about $40. It has Uncanny X-men 1-461 on it plus 17 annuals and the Giant Sized #1 on a DVDRom for your computer. It's a Marvel sanctioned product and perfectly legal. There you will also find 40 Years of Spiderman and now 40 Years of Avengers. For a person on a budget, you can't do any better than that. I have this disc and was quite pleased with it.

If you are asking about some sort of illegal download, you can stop right there because it is a banning offense for anyone to post such links here.

you don't need to start at #1. There's alot of not very good and dated material that's not really necessary to read at all.

It's like a VCR. You put the disc in your DVD drive on your computer -- hopefully you have one -- and it starts up all by itself. It uses Adobe Reader 6.0 (it comes with the disc if you don't have it already) to read it which has system requirements of -- Windows 98, NT with service pack 6, 2000 with service pack 2, or XP. 32MB RAM (64 recommended), 60mg of available harddrive space, Internet Explorer 5.01, 5.5, 6.0, 6.1 or above. *squeekness was reading the box*

Anyhoo, a menu will come up from which you can select by year, the books you want to view. The books are a series of scans from the actual books, ads included which I thought was rather funny. The scans are of varying quality from good to great depending on how old the titles are. The old newsprint pages aren't as sharp as the glossy, but all are more than readable. You can zoom in as close as you like without compromising the quality. This is a zoomed in hypersnap that I took for someone. You can see the quality is quite good.

The thing to remember is that this disc only contains Uncanny X-men issues. Abjectiveless began sometime before this disc leaves off and there may be crossover issues you won't have. I am hoping Marvel releases a 15 Years of X-men to remedy that. A Wolverine one would be nice too.

I guess they just wanted to provide a big chunk of consecutive issues for a good price. For the money, it's the best way to go to catch up. That's almost 500 issues for less than $50. I wanted it becuase I don't have anything before the Giant Sized #1 where Logan and Colosuss and all those guys joined up.

I just saw this myself and it's a great alternative to the colorless Essentials Volumes, the costly HB Masterworks and the sparce PB Masterworks. Crossovers being left out are bad, but the TPB's can cover those areas. Only problem I see is you can't take the books to the John with you unless you print them.

Ah yes, a note: If you try to print off of the disc, you get a great big fat Marvel watrermark all over the pictures, so not recommended. The disc is helpful though, for matters of debate. If some of us are discussing a particular issue and I have a point to back up, it's easier to pop the disc in and take a quick hypersnap of a relevant panel -- like above -- than to dig out the original issue and scan it.

Guess I could take a laptop in there, but those things get hot on the bottom. :P

Saw they also have 40 years of Avengers, but it's sans the Giant Size issues. Guess there will always be something for us to ***** about. Give us 400-500 issues of our favorite comics for pennies-per-issue and we'll find something.

I like these, but I might hold off and see if they have a version 2.0 in a few months that correct some of these gripes.

It's probably not for the avid collecter, but at least if you're a newbie on a budget you have this as an option.

It looks like you did a cut-n-paste from the cd. How did you do this? Are these in Adobe PDF or did you rely on the old Alt+print screen to capture to the clipboard?

I used Hypersnap which works like Alt+print screen. I'm not really computer savvy so it was the easiest way. I just zoomed in on the panel I wanted, Hypersnapped it and then trimmed it with Thumbs.

Beats the heck out of a scanner and Jasc Paint Shop Pro for the cropping. Nice to know that the Alt+print screen thing will work with it. I'm beginning to like this a bunch.
