EXCLUSIVE: Get Out writer-director Jordan Peele’s Monkeypaw Productions is teaming with J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot and Warner Bros Television on Lovecraft Country, a one-hour drama that has been given a straight-to-series order by HBO. The pilot will be written by Underground executive producer/writer Misha Green. Peele will be exec producer along with Green, Abrams and Ben Stephenson. Green will also be showrunner.

There is connective tissue to Peele’s breakout genre feature Get Out, which brought a Black Lives Matter theme to the horror genre. Lovecraft Country focuses on 25-year-old Atticus Black. After his father goes missing, Black joins up with his friend Letitia and his Uncle George to embark on a road trip across 1950s Jim Crow America to find him. This begins a struggle to survive and overcome both the racist terrors of white America and the malevolent spirits that could be ripped from a Lovecraft paperback. The goal is an anthological horror series that reclaims genre storytelling from the African-American perspective.

Huh. Well, I'm interested in a Lovecraftian series, so I'll have to keep an eye on this.

Always thought hbo should dip their toes into horror, I'll be watching

This gonna be cray.

This book has been in my audible and kindle wish list for a while. Guess ill bump it up on my "to read" list.

This sounds so horrifically weird.

Good times.

So will they actually be using Lovecraftian entities like shoggoths and such?

get some solid writers and episode directors and make it happen.
Horror has a drastic lack of black protagonists. Even less explored is the "natural" horror of life as a racial minority during the Jim Crow era...

This combo is a match made in heaven.

That's because they're the first to go. :cwink:

Get Out is no different.

This does sound like a good series. Finding decent Lovecraftian material (based on Lovecraft, not inspired by) is not easy to come by. The irony of using black protaganists against the racism of Lovecraft is not lost on me either.

Courtney B. Vance and Elizabeth Debicki join the cast.

Vance will portray George Black, Atticus’ (Majors) uncle and publisher of the “Safe Negro Travel Guide.” Debicki, meanwhile, will star as Christina Braithwhite, the only daughter of Samuel Braithwhite, the leader of a secret order calling themselves the “Sons of Adam.”

Jurnee Smollett-Bell, Jonathan Majors, Wunmi Mosaku and Aunjanue Ellis will also star.

Holy crap this looks great. Looks like I finally got a HBO show to look forward to that can fill my Watchmen fix.

Even without the fascinating dichotomy of race and Lovecraft, anything with Jonathon Majors has my attention now after "Last Black Man in San Francisco". DC needs to snatch him up as John Stewart stat!

It sucks Peele gets a lot of flack from the alt-right when he’s so talented. You can disagree with someone’s opinion and still find value in their talents. Hell, I’m a republican and I think what he has to say about society is too true.

......... yeah, it’s a real shame he can’t get those guys on-board.

I don't know which is more scary, the Lovecraft stuff or the Jim Crow South.

I remember first hearing about Sundown towns. The concept sounded insane for a society that considers it's self civilized.

Damn this has been a long time coming.
