Lovecraft Country - Jordan Peele and Bad Robot Team Up on HBO

I enjoyed it. I’ll come back for episode 2.

Not gonna lie, the show being set in the Jim Crow era was turning me off because we as black people are still dealing with the ramifications of systemic racism in this country today; but it also goes to show that the more things change, the more they stay the same. So I guess that makes it timely. HBO sure loves doing black productions that are period pieces: this, ‘Boycott’, ‘Bessie’, parts of ‘Watchmen’, all dealing with racial oppression.

But I’m all for a show with a stellar black cast like this dealing with monsters, demons, and the supernatural in general. Jurnee, Majors, Courtney B Vance aside, I really hope they give Aunjanue Ellis material she can sink her teeth into. She’s one of the most underrated and talented black actresses we have.

Admirable start.

Loved it. Kinda reminded me of Penny Dreadful: City of Angels, only this show gives me the horror I wanted. (And it's way better in general imo) I can't wait to see where the story goes, that's how you know it's a good pilot episode.

Also funny how this was getting review bombed, just like Watchmen... gee, I wonder why :whatever:

Something I didn't quite understand, the cop says he can arrest the team after sundown because Atticus was pissing in the wood, was that a real thing back then ? The cop could kill them after sundown ?

The first episode didn’t hook me, but it definitely sparked my curiosity. I think it’s pretty obvious the systemic racism the main characters are facing is meant to be scarier than the monsters. It’s an interesting take and I’m looking forward to seeing it unpack.

There is something great to the imagery of Jackie Robinson beating down Lovecraft's Cthullu.

So, stuff happend this episode. Not entirely sure what, but it happened.

Things getting weird now.

I love the fact that they leaned even harder on the Lovecraftian/Cosmic horror in this episode. That's definitely the kind of stuff that I want to see more of in this show and so far they haven't dissapointed me. I''m expecting it to get weirder and crazier each episode at least that's what I'm hoping for.

This episode was very good but so, so weird. I'm glad Michael Kenneth Williams is here but
I'm so sad that George is dead...I keep hoping there's some twist involved that brings him back. I'm in denial.
