A lot of people like to insult or make fun of themselves.

Some say they do this because they want to do it before someone else does or some just do it for laughs.

But some people think that if you do this then you don't like yourself or something, so is making fun of yourself a sign of having low self-esteem?

I won't just make fun of myself for the hell of it, but if I'm getting picked on by some friends, I'll laugh about it as well. I'll even tell embarrassing stories about dumb crap I did, no problem.

Sometimes we're our own worst critic, but I don't see the harm in laughing at yourself. We've all done embarrassing things at some point in our life. Better to laugh about it and move on than let it 'gnaw at you' so to speak.

word, son.

I called myself an a**hole the other day, i knocked that f**ker out! Cheeky prink

There's a difference between being able to laugh at yourself and making fun at yourself. If it turns into constantly putting yourself down (even in jokes) it becomes a self esteem issue.

Agreed. And most of the time it's people just fishing for compliments.

I just like to make people laugh; and since I know everything about myself, it makes for an easy target.

That's what I do. I only have so much material for those around me, and my pop culture references tend to fly over people's heads more than a Dennis Miller standup routine, so I find that joking about one of my obvious flaws gets a cheap laugh out of people.

Plus, people don't tend to get upset about you teasing them if they see you're just as willing to make fun of yourself.

These two posts sum it up perfectly.

I think everyone should make fun of themselves every once in a while. I'd say that a lot of the problems with the world are caused by people taking things way too seriously.

I make fun of myself all the time...I make many self-depreciate jokes, but I consider myself to have a high self-esteem...Outside, I just don't wanna brag or boast about myself.

It depends on what kind of jokes you make if all you do is just rag on yourself you might have some self esteem issues. But I like to make the occasional joke about my self and some of my personality traits..

I constantly poke fun at myself. It helps lighten the mood in tough situations and can be great a great icebreaker when conducting a meeting as long as your jokes don't hit too hard.

No one should ever call themselves out for being a closet homosexual or a functionally illeterate governor.

self deprecation is funny, and sometimes i need to balence my innate cockiness.

Me and myself make fun of I all the time. We both have a laugh at I's expense... it's a blasty blast.

It all depends on the person.

Some people use it as a defense mechanism

Some using it as a way to 'put themselves down' due to low self esteem

Others are comfortable with their inadequacies and have made peace with them and just do it for the pleasure of entertaining others.

The ability to laugh at yourself is the sign of a healthy and sane mind.
