The thing I don't understand is the acid was also only waist high, how do you drown in something waist high? I really don't think the official cause could have been drowning.

I'm assuming the face protector was some sort of breathing mask that would have kept him from breathing in the fumes that made him pass out and fall, so yes the face protector would have kept in from falling in.
