A D.C. police statement says the man on Tuesday morning heard a popping sound and felt a sharp pain. He is recovering.

Video posted on the website of WJLA-TV shows the man waving and walking down the street and exclaiming "This is awesome." He starts to say "Merry Christmas" when suddenly he turns around, shouts in pain and says he's been shot in the back with a pellet gun.

He was taken to a hospital but is OK. Police say the toys were delivered.

The man's name was not released, but he says on the video he's glad no one else got hurt.

It's not often we hear someone trying to sleigh Santa.

mascots are just giant targets. something about costumes (outside of halloween) just makes people violent.

It's such a weird thing that we cease to think they're human because they're making a mask or something.

Outside of Halloween? People get robbed, beaten, and killed on Halloween for wearing costumes too. Many street gangs around the US has their gang initiations on Halloween in which they are to do these things to people wearing costumes on Halloween.

Anyway, this incident reminds me of the Boondocks when Huey tried to shoot Santa with a pellet gun.

Who is this "we" you speak of? Normal people don't think that way. :o

The Santa who got shot was lucky it was just a pellet gun. The typical perp in Southeast DC is packing more firepower than that.

actually, what he's talking about is common to most human beings; if research is to be believed. and it's not limited to masks. there are plenty of other ways people are dehumanized. it can become a necessary way to thinking, if you're in the military (us vs them).
