MONTREAL - A man is suing Loto-Quebec for $13.5 million he says he won in a drawing last May but was denied on the grounds he bought his ticket seven seconds past the deadline.

Joel Ifergan bought two Super Seven tickets at a convenience store last May 23 and says he ordered the tickets at 8:59 p.m., believing he had just made it under the deadline.

His second ticket - which had winning numbers for that draw - was delayed by a few seconds but Ifergan still maintains he is due his winnings, half of the $27 million jackpot.

The Montreal-area resident says the convenience store clerk looked at the clock and told him he had one minute to buy his tickets when he came in to the store. Ifergan blames the processing delay on Loto-Quebec's central computer terminal.
Ifergan says when he looked at his tickets, one had the date for May 23 and the second ticket had a date for the next draw, on May 30.

The terminal apparently treats each ticket as a separate purchase. The time recorded on the second ticket was seven seconds after the 9 p.m. deadline for the May 23 draw.

Ifergan has filed his lawsuit with Quebec Superior court.

"I am gonna play lotto, I don't give a f***
even though I ain't gon be here tomorrow, so what?"

That's bunk. 7 seconds? Are they really going to short him his cash for 7 seconds?

Yeah. I would.

Let this be a lesson to all procrastinators...don't buy lottery tickets close to the deadlines. :o:up:

There's no way he'll win the money. It would clearly show on his ticket that it was invalid for the lottery in question.

he isn't going to get anything....

i hope he hasn't spent anything or told his boss to go **** himself yet

Seriously, why do you buy the tickets at 8:59??

Maybe he figured he had enough time to buy two before deadline, probably a last minute thing to go along with some coffee or smokes.

he should sue the store owner for inapropriate timing on his clock and selling under false pretences.

He's going to argue that under consumer protection laws, the determinant factor is when he decided to purchase the ticket, not the time the ticket was actually purchased.

It could be an unforeseen loophole that he could win under.

if this is what happened to me i would probably go over the edge.

This guy is going to lose his case and then he is going to live out "My Name is Earl" in reverse because karma screwed him over.

two yrs ago, my dad had the winning ticket for the lotto here and during the the weekend he threw the ticket away( by accident of course) into the waste paper bin and the cleaner at his work claimed it and won 100 000. My dad was upset, but he said the is glad that the cleaner got the ticket.

I did read a story about a Japanese guy who played the same numbers for years on end. The one draw he didn't play, was the one draw he would have won.

There's just no way that guy wins the case. If his numbers would have hit on the 30th instead, you know he would have cashed it in. He wouldn't say, well, I meant to buy my ticket for the 23rd, so I can't accept this.
All he is going to do is waste money on lawyers. But he does have to try.

So what happens to the other winner? Do they get all of the money now or half and the other half is put in escrow?

Reminds me of a story from the lottery over here, they guy was a drug dealer so he won but couldn't keep it. Because he couldn't produce enough evidence that his ticket wasn't bought with drug money,

There should be legal punishment for those who'll try and waste the court's time with frivolous suits like this.
