Recap: SDCC '08 (Part 5)
OK, GREEN LANTERN MOVIE!
Author: Chris Clow
Friday, October 3, 2008
EDITOR'S NOTE: Due to family obligations and the fact that I did A LOT of traveling for BOF this Summer, I did not attend Comic Con International out in San Diego for the first time in years. However…
BOF contributor Chris Clow did attend and has a series of recaps for our reading pleasure! - Jett
Marc Guggenheim can be a big tease, but he also answered all of my questions honestly. Some of this stuff has already gotten out, but I still fired away….
BOF/CC: Marc, GREEN LANTERN is one of DC's most popular titles right now, and rightfully so. What Geoff Johns, Ivan Reis, and Ethan Van Sciver are doing is phenomenal.
MG: “I agree!”
BOF/CC: Which brings me to my question, and understand that it's not that I don't have confidence in you or (co-writer) Michael Green. But, why doesn't Geoff Johns have a hand in writing this?
MG: “Fair question. Geoff has been involved with us in the sense that he gives us advice on how to write the characters -- and he has seen the script. His comments were encouraging and helpful, and he seemed to be pleased with what we did.”
BOF/CC: Cool. So, I haven't heard a lot about this, but is Sinestro present in the story?
MG: (smiles) “Oh yes. Yes he is.”
BOF/CC: Is he a Green Lantern?
MG: “When we meet him, yes. The notion that Hal Jordan's mentor becomes his greatest enemy works on so many levels that we'd be foolish not to include it.”
BOF/CC: What're you looking at as far as a release date is concerned?
MG: “Well, we haven't (as of 7/27/08 - Chris) gotten the greenlight yet, but we really hope to have something to show fans here (at Comic-Con) next year.”
CC: That'd be awesome!
MG:</B> “I know! That's what we want to do.”
BOF/CC: I've heard you have some cool DC Universe cameos in your draft -- anything you can tell me about that?
MG: “They mostly occur when the ring leaves Abin Sur's finger and tries to find a worthy replacement. I can tell you that the two chief characters it flies by are Guy Gardner and Clark Kent.”
BOF/CC: That should give some fanboys (like me) a nerdgasm!
MG: (laughs) “Well then we did our job!”
And that concluded the big moments of mention I had in San Diego. The most rewarding thing by far -- especially if you're a comic book fan -- is the opportunity to interact with the people who create the stories involving our favorite characters. Comic Con International in San Diego is a mammoth event show, but once you're used to it, it's a blast. I'd encourage anyone thinking about going (and who have the expenses to do so) to check it out.
If all goes according to plan -- and any of you end up going, then -- I'll see you next year! Thanks again to Jett for the awesome opportunities I wouldn't have gotten if it wasn't for him!
