March 2007 Sales Charts

it makes me sad that books like ultimate power, onslaught: reborn and wolverine: origins can crack the top 50, while books like dmz, dynamo 5 (with a debut issue) and the exterminators don't even make the list.

there is no hope for quality in this business.

Someone bitter that the comics they like don't sell? :whatever:

no. it's just kind of depressing that the majority of the comic reading population embraces crap. it makes it that much harder for a creator to make a living producing decent comics when all many people care about is rob liefeld drawing a re-hashed story from the 90's.

No it's not that. It's that those books are crap.

Says YOU, and since you think Hideo Kojima is some kind of genius, it's not like your opinion counts.

I like the comics, and I'm kinda fed up of people crying about titles they like not doing well. Deal with it guys. If the concept is strong enough it will sell...if not, it will sink. It's that simple.

not really.

comics are like everything else. movies, television, music...it's all the same. pre-packaged crap sells. it's a fact. that's why american idol is the top rated show every week and why "wrestlers" are allowed to make movies. it's why there's going to be a sequel to the punisher movie and why britney spears has a career.

the general populace has bad taste in everything. i just (wrongly) assume sometimes that comic book readers are a step above that.

Yes that's obviously it.

It cant be that the books you like BLOW, and can't be given away. Obviously.

Wolverine: Origns - crap

Onslaught Reborn - crappy Liefield art

Ultimate Power - I really dont care for the Ultimate Marvel Universe and Greg Land is a dirty old tracer.

Here's some books people should be buying more of: Cable & Deadpool, Daredevil, the Immortal Iron Fist, Silent War, Punisher: War Journal, FIRESTORM!!!!

This is what makes me laugh about you...they are all crap, yet you think Hideo's hideous, fifth grade english dialogue and plot are cinematic genius. :whatever:

So again- don't really care about what you see as quality.

find me someone that's read dmz or dynamo 5, and didn't like it.

You want credit because the five people who bother to read them like them?

Dude- WHO reads comics they hate? Anyone who continues to read a comic they hate is an idiot, pure and simple.

My taste in quality (awesome) > Your taste in quality (crap) :o

you admit these high selling books are crap. you just proved my point. crap sells. nice job.

also, you just completely contradicted yourself by previously stating:

"If the concept is strong enough it will sell...if not, it will sink."

but now you're saying "crappy books sell." and you're calling who an idiot?

My taste in quality (awesome) > Your taste in quality (crap) :o

Do you speak english as a first language btw? I ask because as an english speaker, I hate to see it butchered- which Hideo Kojima does with every piece of dialogue he writes.

I was talking about for COMIC BOOKS. The charts for comic books are obviously more to do with quality than anything else, this is common sense.

With box office and game charts, you see how many people buy the game or pay to see the movie. You don't see who liked it or didn't like it.

If a comic is consistently selling well, obviously people love it enough to continue reading.

Damn, is common sense dead here? :o Two minutes of just thinking could have brought you to that conclusion....

I can definately understand photojones2's lament. DYNAMO 5 is a solid superhero launch that offers fans of the genre all the fundamentals they enjoy with some neat twists, crisp dialogue and good art. But, it's Image, which has about 3% Dollar and Market share (even Dark Horse outsells them). So stores underorder it and fans never give it a chance, if they see it at all. However, because whatever paltry number of copies that were ordered were all picked up, Diamond will announce it "sold out" as if that means much. A shame it didn't see the Top 100, although both #1 and #2 of DYNAMO 5 are seeing reprints, so that may add to some sales in the long run. Lord knows fans of books like RUNAWAYS can share this lament.

Although ULTIMATE POWER actually hasn't been too shabby. It's no masterwork but I've enjoyed it. Been a better UFF story than the actual ULTIMATE FANTASTIC FOUR has been for a bit, IMO.

Although I really don't see why ONSLAUGHT REBORN is selling as high as it is. I see copies collecting dust on the shelf, the art is garbage and I've heard nothing positive about the writing from Loeb on it.

DC sure got a drubbing this month. A slew of their titles are down in sales and they only managed one hit in the Top 10. And methinks Marvel wishes they hyped Whedon/RUNAWAYS a wee bit more, as his namepower alone actually got DARK HORSE to sell something in the Top 10. A non "big two" company hasn't done that in at least 4 years.

Surprisingly, I guess CW actually did boost MOON KNIGHT about ten slots into the bottom of the Top 20, as it usually sells around the Top 30 or 35. Bendis merely proves why he's Marvel's unofficial EIC by having his MIGHTY AVENGERS actually outsell NEW AVENGERS, although both sold in the Top 10. The high number for BATTLE DAMAGE REPORT, a themed Handbook sort of title, is a bit surprising, and proves why Marvel is perhaps overmilking CW. P:WJ and GHOST RIDER are still slipping down the numbers, but selling moderately (above the Top 50 is fine by Marvel's standards). X-MEN: FIRST CLASS sells in the 80's, which isn't that great, but is being upgraded to a mini. And as usual, IRREDEEMABLE ANT-MAN is nowhere in the Top 100, cementing to writers and creators that originality doesn't sell; namepower and franchises sell.

THE SPIRIT, a solid read, just barely outsells X-MEN: FIRST CLASS.

And that RUNAWAYS SAGA wasn't even on the list. We'll have to wait until May to see how Whedon improved RUNAWAYS's sales. If they didn't at least double, the book may be sunk, as he's only on until October.

no.

first your stance was that if "the concept was strong" a book would do well. okay. but then your stance becomes "those books that do well are crappy".

wolverine: origins is a top selling book. you think it's crap. so tell me, does that mean that people are consistenly enjoying crap? i'll give you a hint: yes.

Who said that???? I didn't.... I like Wolverine Origins

I love when people declare themselves arbiters of what constitutes good and bad taste. They never for an instant think that they're the ones with bad taste. Liefeld Rocks!

uh...you qouted hippy and the books he listed. wolverine: origins was among them, and you said "they're all crap"...did i miss something?

btw, admitting to liking w:o is the same as admitting you enjoy putting poo poo in your mouth.

Yes you missed it. Go back and read again...slowly. Slowly. Untill you realise what I said.

No, admitting to liking w:O is admitting I'm not a lame ass fanboy who hates daniel way :o

Exactly. :whatever:

That's what amuses me.

''It's not me who's wrong, it's everyone else!''

Just to jump in here, titles like DMZ and Dynamo 5 sell incredibly well in connection with their print runs, so its really not a situation where the comic is in trouble because it doesn't sell in the top 100. I believe Dynamo 5 sold out at Diamond and everything.

That being said, it would be great if the fanbase would be large enough to warrant more issues being printed and sold, but a book like DMZ is really appealing to a niche market within the comic book niche market, just like Ex Machina or Y The Last Man, and all those titles do well in the TPB market.

exactly. there are many variables as to what makes a comic book sell in the top 100. print runs, exposure, publishers, write ups and word of mouth all play parts. all that said, i just wish the market was fairer to quality books. i feel for people like tony moore who's drawing two monthly books (and doing it very well), and ryan ottley who's full time job (drawing invincible) doesn't pay very much. they're talented creative people, and they deserve more than what the market has to offer.
