Mars Lander just found ice

dammit. well i guess we can go ahead and destroy everything on this planet.

If they find oil....George Bush will announce ''The war on Aliens''

An Intergalactic war on Martian Oil....

He better not or there will be a kaboom :hehe:

Someone stole his X52 Modulator! :cmad:

Mee should be banned for such a crime :o

Here's part of the article I found interesting:

The samples are being examined for traces of organic molecules, among other substances, but the lander does not have instruments that could directly detect life.

Well what good is this mission for then?!

lame. we always knew there was ice on Mars. and other planets. plus, we've sent those 2 rovers a few years ago to analyze the surface of the planet.
there is no "significant" life on Mars!

I thought we already knew it had ice!?

Do you have any idea what you're asking? There is no automated machine that could really detect lifeforms, especially considering we know nothing of the potential lifeforms in question. We don't quite know what to look for.

I thought we already knew it had ice!?
Yeah, which brings me to my second point of this post: what we don't know for certain is the composition of said ice. To actually have a sample for analysis is a HUGE leap forward.

When we learn about the chemical and physical properties of these samples, we can then make projections about what types of life exist there, or may have existed there at some time, if any.

Yea I guess that is true...it is great news to confirm that there is viable water on the planet. I know they are working on a rover right now that when sent will burn the samples and use gas chromatography to analyze the compounds in the samples. I wonder why we keep sending a rover every few years and why we don't send people already.

Now if we can just get the Lander to make frozen daiquiris we'll be golden.

This is really good news . I would love to see if a species on mars is radically different and if it could be brought back here.

Ice. Ice. Baby!!

GW, "Ah swore somebahdy told me they had sum WMDs around that place somewhar. Those Martians are a sneaky group o' folks".

"Rarely is the question asked, is our Martians learning."

and should'nt this belong in the Astronomy thread Morg!?!
1. already known information
2.thread not in designated area
AT LAST!!!! Retribution is MINE!!!

anyways.... how bout that ice!

I wonder if they'll ever had Martian bottled water anytime soon..:hehe:

Why would we bring back an unknown species onto our planet:huh: Andromeda maybe:o

Normally I hate repeating myself, but...
