William Monahan (The Departed) will write a fact-based thriller for Paramount based on an article that will appear in Playboy later this year, says Variety.

It's the story of a drug dealer who traded a prison sentence to go undercover at a maximum security hospital for the criminally insane, where he tried to get a serial killer to divulge the whereabouts of his victims.

Graham King will produce with Alexandra Milchan, and the Paramount project kicks off a first-look deal that King's GK Films has made with Monahan, who will take an office in King's new Santa Monica headquarters. Joel Gotler will be executive producer.

King was introduced to the project by Milchan, who had received a one-page proposal for the article by Jim Keene and writer Hillel Levin.

The son of a police chief, Keene fell from grace after he was caught dealing drugs. As an alternative to a 10 years-to-life sentence, he was allowed to cozy up to a man authorities believed murdered 25 young women. Only the prison psychiatrist knew Keene was undercover, plus a visiting "girlfriend" who was actually an FBI agent.

This sounds like a hell of a story, i am sure Leo will be reading this shortly. :woot:

looks like this is Leo's kind of a movie. I'm sure he'll play the drug dealer gone undercover character and it will mess him up mentally. He's good at that. lol

Departed became one of my favorite movies, so this has definitely got my interest piqued. The success of films like One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and Girl Interrupted are coming to mind.

I hope we get some casting and a director attached to this one soon as it sounds like it has massive potential.

I totally missed this item in the latest issue of Production Weekly, but Alex from FirstShowing sent me a link to this story on Cinemablend about a project called Falcon’s Tale that Martin Scorsese is supposedly attached to direct. What is this movie? A quick internet search turns up NOTHING. But I decided to dig a little deeper and have come upon more information about the project.
James Keene and author/reporter Hillel Levin sold a one-page description of this story to Playboy and to Paramount / GK Films (the production company behind Edge of Darkness) in a seven-figure film deal in November 2007. The article, titled “The Strange Redemption of James Keene”, appeared in the August 2008 issue of Playboy on page 54. The book is due to be released by St. Martin’s in Fall 2009. So what is the story about?
“James Keene was serving a 10-year-to-life sentence as a convicted drug dealer when the FBI came to him with an amazing offer. They wanted him to enter a high-security prison for the criminally insane in order to get information from a suspected serial killer awaiting retrial. If he helped them succeed, they would free James from prison. Only one person in the prison would know Jim’s true identity.”
Sounds very compelling. Academy Award-winning screenwriter William Monahan (The Departed) is penning the screenplay adaptation. And as you know, Monahan has ties to Scorsese, and penned The Departed, which makes the story that much more believable. I’m not sure if Scorsese is officially attached, and even if he is, that doesn’t mean that he will direct it (if Scorsese directs 10% of the films he is currently attached to, I’ll be amazed).

This sounds like it could be amazing.

The premise seems awfully similar to someone's past fan fic on here. Hmm. :o

Okay. Sound interesting.

But...Deosn't Shutter Island deal with criminal investigation at a mental institution aswell? It sounds quite similair.

^^^

Well, Leo plays there a detective, who is working on the investigation of one woman's death.

As for this project, I like the story and I hope the final script will be even more complex.

And yes, hunter, you should really sue!!! :D

Yes! Yes you should!

I will of course be expecting my check in the mail, considering I pointed this out. :word:

I will be sure to point Scorsese's "sleep with the fishes" friends in your direction.

Mental institution that is under investigation for it's practices, here it's a high security prison for the criminally insane, the themes and story are quite different I'd say.

This film sounds incredible. I love Scorsese and I admire Monoghan's writing, The premise sounds facinating. Damn, These are the types of films I'd like to direct but all the good ones are being taken.

You're directing films? Seriously? :)

Na, I'm an aspiring filmmaker. :woot: It's something I've always wanted to do since I was 13. But that's the kind of genre that I'd like to to take on. Suspense thrillers.
