Marvel Bribes Retailers to Destroy DC Comics

Well, I believe the exclusivity thing was actually something that DC started with Grant Morrison jumping ship from Marvel to DC in the early-mid 2000s. I mean, those had been around well before that, I'm sure, but I don't think it was really something we see nearly as frequently as nowadays.

I think a lot of it was part marketing. Marvel wanted to distinguish themselves as the 'edgier' brand at a time with stuff like New X-Men and Ultimates. They wanted the 'tude to match the overall look, and they just didn't really drop that or anything, even if they phased it out a bit. What Grant Morrison said in Supergods kind of seems to go with that idea, too.
