Marvel coming to Disney theme parks in near future?

One of the juiciest rumors currently making the rounds is that Disney is thinking of turning Tomorrowland in their theme parks into the Stark Expo. If you seen Iron Man 2, you’ll remember that the Stark Expo is a kind of Disneyland environment based on the latest technological innovations and that’s what Tomorrowland strives for at Disney’s parks. Add that to the fact that Disney now owns Marvel and it sounds like a match made in Heaven. The latest update is that this rumor does have some basis in fact but there are some major logistical hurdles, namely a lack of time. The ideal time to launch a Marvel themed section of the Disney theme parks would be next summer with The Avengers and that doesn’t seem possible.

After the jump, read more about that and another new ride where fans can battle their favorite villains.

Starting with the last bit first, Seattle Weekly (via MiceChat) was talking to Jonathan Freeman, the voice of Jafar from Disney’s Aladdin and wrote the following in their profile:

In fact, during a phone interview between Seattle rehearsals for the much-anticipated new Aladdin stage adaptation, Freeman accidentally lets something slip about an unannounced battle-your-favorite-baddies Disney park attraction in which the venal Vizier would appear. But he quickly catches himself and summarizes his situation another way.

What exactly could that mean and where would it be? To guess would be pure speculation but it sounds pretty cool.

On to the Marvel news, once the rumor leaked a few weeks ago, the team over at Comic Book Movie emailed in the question to the Disney themed podcast The Magical Definition and got their email read on the show. It’s a lengthy answer but here’s are a few highlights:

There is a skein of truth to this… Disney is looking to find ways to bring the Marvel characters at the Disneyland resort. Problem is they don’t entirely fit Tomorrowland which is sort of where the Tony Stark name came up, the Expo thing. Here’s the thing: what was initially being looked at was something that would tie to next summer and Joss Whedon’s Avengers movie with the notion that it would be a catch-all movie prop kind of exhibit. Let’s be honest here, the thing of Innoventions in its current state is that it’s a trade show and kind of a carryover from the [former Disney CEO Michael] Eisner era and [current Disney CEO Bob] Iger would like to do something different there and given that they spent this $4 billion on the Marvel characters, they’d like to get them in the park.

The problem is that it doesn’t entirely fit the Tomorrowland theme, strictly the name Tony Stark Expo. They don’t want to tie this to just one Marvel character; they want to do multiple Marvel characters. That’s the whole point of the Avengers movie. There are more hard practical issues to deal with here: for example the whole spinning building thing. Innoventions has capacity concerns, it’s a slow loader. Again, it’s the whole notion of you’re gonna have to spend money to re-theme the exterior of the building, to sell the Marvel idea. It’s kind of problematic. The concern right now is that could they fast track it in time for the movie release next year? There’s a bunch of people at Imagineering to the effect of, ‘Look, if we started a year ago, we could make it.’ You’re only gonna have one chance to introduce the Marvel characters into the Disney parks and there’s a lot of people who are like, ‘We should do it right!’ And just rushing something in as a replacement for Innoventions because everyone agrees it’s kind of tired and that sort of thing.

That’s in relation to Disneyland in California. But what about Walt Disney World in Florida? Well they have that problem and more – mainly the fact that Marvel characters are already all over Universal’s nearby Islands of Adventure. Again, there’s a longer answer over at Comic Book Movie, but here’s a piece:

The interesting thing there is that there is supposedly a negotiation – very quietly through backchannels – that’s going on with Universal. I’m not hearing that they’ve made much headway but that there is already a pre-established relationship with Universal actually on the back of the Oswald [The Lucky Rabbit, Walt Disney's original creation before Mickey Mouse] deal that Disney and Universal were able to come to terms and make a swap to get the rights of that character. I will say this much, given Universal is spending as much money as they are on ["The Amazing Adventures of"] Spider-Man redo, that to me doesn’t say that this is going change out anytime soon. I know they’d like to happen on Disney’s side of the fence.

To bring this full circle, I can confirm that they are in fact, looking at a Marvel thing for the parks. I can confirm that this [Stark Expo rumor] was deliberately leaked as a trial balloon and see if the fans would get excited to help the project along but beyond that it’s one of three spots that they’re looking for Marvel. It just depends now whether or not they decide that they really have to go fast and have something open day-and-date with Avengers next year or pick to choose a more graduated approach very slowly and carefully so we’ll have to see what happens
.

I for one would love to see Marvel superheroes at Disneyland, where I can bring my kids. It will be hard to bring it to Disney Resort in Orlando, though, unless they can work out a deal with Universal.

Oh man!

I would like to see a X-Mansion theme park with cerebro, danger room, etc.

I think there is a simple solution to this.Universal has rights to certain Marvel characters. Those who are featured in rides and who pose for Photo ops(Wolverine,Spider-man,Dr. Doom,Hulk,Storm,Rouge,Cyclops,Green Goblin) Have the comic versions stay at Universal since that's what they have the rights to and at Disney parks have the cartoon and film versions. So at the parks you'd have Thor,Iron Man and Cap from the Marvel Studios films and Spider-man from the upcoming Ultimate Spider-man cartoon.

Universal only has the rights to Marvel characters for theme parks east of the Mississippi River. Disney has the rights everywhere else.

Anyways, this Stark Expo idea is too good to pass up. I think that Disney should completely revamp Tomorrowland around the Tony Stark Expo, the Fantastic Four, and Tron. Keep Space Mountain, the Monorail, and Innoventions. But revamp everything else to make it look like the World of Tomorrow!

I knew the Mississippi part.I was talking about a deal that could let marvel characters appear in Disney world since they'd be different versions.

That will never fly. In the end, Ultimate Spider-Man is still Spider-Man and the movie versions of Thor, Iron Man, Captain America, etc. are still Thor, Iron Man, and Captain America. It doesn't matter if they're movie version, cartoon version, Ultimate version, etc. A is A, and no matter what version he is, Spider-Man is Spider-Man.

I don't see the problem with Universal holding some rights to Marvel theme parks attraction, it will certainly increase public awareness to Marvel characters and thus advantageous to Disney themselves.

Personally, I think that Disney would put the characters to better use in their theme parks than Universal would.

It just sucks that eventually Amazing adventures of Spider-man and Hulk coaster would be lost in the process. Also off topic but I desperately want a tron lightcycle ride.

I wouldn't mind Marvel in Disneyland, but I would hope that Disney's "family friendly"
credo wouldn't influence how Marvel scripts are developed, and thus, used, full circle, in the theme park. The thing I like about most Marvel movies is the dark, leaning towards noir. aspect.
BTW, in the Pirates of the Carabeen ride. The Jack Sparrow animatron looks so slick and out of place with all the '50's anamatronics.

Also, I would definitely hop on the Mystique ride, especially if she can change into any woman!

I don't think that the Marvel characters should be dark in a Disneyland attraction. It works for movies, but it doesn't work for theme parks which is supposed to be fun for all ages.

I think that Marvel would be an excellent use for Disney in Tomorrowland. I don't get how they're thinking that the Stark Expo wouldn't work in Tomorrowland when it fits perfectly with the ideals of the future. What Disney should do is heavily convert Tomorrowland to reflect their sci-fi properties (particularly Iron Man, the Fantastic Four, Lilo & Stitch, and Tron).

Is there a time limit to Universal's use of Marvel characters?

This is what I don't want to happen

Disney has an idea for a ride or attraction > Disney imagineers tell the screenwriters of an upcoming Marvel comic book film what they want featured in the movie so they can have it tie-in to the ride > Result, you get a watered down, family-friendly - G rated version of one of your favorite Marvel charactors with a scene in the movie that looks forced (i.e. the "ride" part of the movie).

interesting.. hopefully something will be done that gives Marvel characters a permanent exhibit at the Disneyland park.. and hopefully the Marvel rides at Universal will remain popular..

Can Disney World in Orlando have Marvel related rides while Universal has rights to their own Marvel rides?

I do hope Disney will find a way to incorporate Marvel theme rides to Disneyland and California Adventures here in Anaheim, and it seems like a giant missed opportunity if they don't, esp. with DC superhero roller coasters at Six Flags theme parks. For Disney World, it will be tricky due to its proximity with Universal Studio nearby. Hopefully they will figure a way to make it work.

Yes, Marcvader, just like Green Lantern and the ride at 6 Flags. Both parties were involved

there's been talk about taking the out of commissioned "people movers" and turning them into a light cycle track at DisneyLand

i know disney owns another piece of land in anaheim, but the people of anaheim fight them whenever they want to expand... im not sure how much room they actually have left at the CA park..

It's all really tough, Marvel really needs to have there own separate area to create the illusion of being in a "marvel" world... maybe take out toon town in DL??

and while DL has less room, and DW has much much more room for expansion, DW has Universal to deal with...

I have loved both Marvel and Disney basically my entire life. I am actually going to Disney World in 2 months for my honeymoon. However, as much as I would love to see Marvel included in the park, I would really want it to be limited to some attraction in Disney Hollywood Studios (formerly MGM) or something like that, or maybe even adding the Stark Expo to Tomorrowland (as a single attraction, not the entire area) at most. Disney has such a strong tradition and identity of its own that I wouldn't want to compromise the Disney experience by replacing a huge chunk of the park with Marvel attractions. It works for Islands of Adventure because it was a new thing, but don't rock the Disney World boat too much.
