David Maisel -- executive vice president, office of the chief executive, Marvel Entertainment -- expressed optimism over the future of the Spider-Man and X-Men movie franchises after their third movies.

"Obviously those films have done tremendously well and made signficant amounts of profits for our partners, Sony and Fox," Maisel said during Marvel's third quarter conference call on Monday.

"So I would be under the assumption that they would very much want to continue those properties in an aggressive manner."

Maisel was asked about the closeness of the releases of Spider-Man 3 and Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer in 2007 and Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk in 2008. (See below for Hulk release announcement)

"Our films have done extremely well in the early and summer time periods," Maisel said. "That is also a great time for our merchandising and toy activities to release our films.

"We focus very intensely on the right dates for our properties. We find that we can do very well with our movies. They stand on their own, independent on when other Marvel movies are released. They're viewed as individual stories and different in terms of their nuances."

Maisel said there is "significant enough time" between the releases.
Budgets for the Marvel-produced films will be between $100-$160 million, Maisel said.

Maisel also noted that Marvel will be using its distribution partners' pay television deals for its self-produced films -- i.e. Paramount with Iron Man and Universal with Hulk.

"We have full confidence in place that they will have attractive market deals for our films," Maisel said.
Marvel did keep free United States television ownership and will make its own deals for those rights.

ok ya I hope it happens but If ratner gets even close to anything realted to x-men I will be forced to...to ....to write a very mean letter yes that will set him straight. No but seriusly I hope they do continue but not for a long while like a decade or so.

Oh god no! Spider-mans alright but let the X-men die now. Let them sleep for 10 years so that they will be reborn as a new fresh franchise without any Ratner influences

just get rid of Halle Berry, find some good writers and a good director and the X-Men series could make a come back.

I hope they bring back Cyclops in X4.

and that Rogue gets her powers back....
Maybe it is time for a movie that is more about Rogue :D

Aint gonna happen folks.

Nice to see you're so optimistic JP. I hope they'll make an X-4 and introduce the most badass X-man ever...GAMBIT! I can't wait to see the look on their faces when they realize that introducing Gambit sooner could have made them a lot more money. After all that's all they care about isn't it?

Heck, my brother caught a scene of X2 on tv (bobby's house) and the first thing he asked when he saw Rogue was: "Where's Gambit?" I answered "there's no gambit" and he "blah, then not gonna watch it, i'm going to sleep."

And he is not really a fan of the x-men (only watched TAS while kid, like me)

If you look at how crowded the box office will be with superhero movies, you wonder if movie-goers are just going to get tired of it.

Marvel is pumping out so many (perhaps unnecessary) superhero movies, plus there's DC's films and various other comic-related movies like the new TMNT and Transformers. Every summer for the next five years there's probably going to be at least 3-5 superhero movies.

X-Men taking 10 years off might not be a bad idea.

I wouldn't mind a sequel, but have at least a three-four year wait. Pumping a X-men movie every year just destroys the franchise.

X4 better happen and with Bryan Singer

all the x-movies so far took a gap of three years.
