I tend to think this way in regards to Grodd. He was a main character in the old Challenge Of The Superfriends cartoon & was a popular character since then, whereas, Bane just emerged in the late 80's/ early 90's (if I'm not mistaken).

Yep, I think he rose to prominence because he was featured in the movie Batman & Robin. He also became mainstream because of the infamous storyline where he broke Batman's back, other than that, the character is just average for me.
