Mass Effect 2

It's weird. I think Mass Effect 2 on it's own holds up quite well. But I personallly bought it because of the interaction with the events of the first game. I guess all I'm saying is, that's a pretty big factor in it.

However, it's still a great game and a great story. I guess without having the experience of 1, though, some things might feel a little disjointed. They oughta do like Shenmue 2 for Dreamcast and add a "Movie" of the first game.

Whether or not ME2 is the better game is a moot point, really. It's not so much a sequel as it is a direct continuation. Not having the experience of playing the first game makes playing ME2 completely pointless.

Not at all, just typical "you are hero save the universe" plot.
You can quite easily jump into Mass Effect 2 while knowing nothing about the previous game.

I've played both games multiple times and even with a synopsis added to the beginning, I feel that they are missing out.

All the little decisions, you make in the first one that appear in the second game, those little nuances are what makes this series so amazing.

I've been reading if you have a relationship in the 1st game and cheat on said person in the 2nd game, it's said to have major effects in the 3rd game. Maybe it's not essential to the main plot of the game but that's what I love about this game.

I'm pretty positive ME1's announcement will not be far behind and that EA is just working out the legalities. EA are greedy SOBs. If they think for one second that they will miss out on even one sale because someone did not play ME2's prequel, then they will release it.

So Garrus' demeanor and rapport with Shepard changes depending on whether you've played the first game or not?

As I recall, you just don't get the buddy-buddy dialogue with him. I think he remarks on Shep's reputation or something like that but essentially treats him as a new guy.

Garrus's reveal in ME2 was intended to be a Holy S*** moment. But it means absolutely nothing without that context. Now it's just, "Hey, it's some Taurian."

I got excited every time I ran into my old crew. Garrus, Ashley, Wrex, Liara and Tali.

I loved everybody. Except Kaiden. Eff that guy.

Well...it maybe a little different. That's if you never recruited Garrus but you did walk past him before you talk to the Council and I believe Anderson said you should go talk to him in the first game.

I'm fairly certain that happens no matter what you do in the first game, so it could legitimately be counted as a part of the first game's canon. Any Shepard would've at least heard of Garrus on the Citadel.

Pretty much everything you mentioned isn't essential at all.
About the only thing close to being essential is the reapers, which gets explained through the game anyway regardless of playing the original.
