Surprised there hasnt been a thread about this news, but anyway, I hope this comes to fruition as I thought M&C was a REALLY good movie with great performances, excellent battle scene's and a real good luck at what life was like on a battle ship, so I really hope we manage to get a sequel out of it, here is the link to the article on comingsoon:

Anyone else hopes this become's a reality?

I am, fir the sheer that they obviously left it open fir a sequal. I want to see what happens next

^Not only that because I really liked the characters, but it was a unique movie, the type you dont see anymore, so I would like to see them continue in that veign.

If Peter Weir returns...

I might have to rewatch it now. I've been wondering for years when we'd see a sequel.

I thought the first was pretty good, just not as great as it was hyped to be. Paul Bettany really made the movie for me.

What year were they in again? I am thinking shortly after Darwinish time... 1870-80ish? I am sure they can pick up something with Imperial exploration in the far East... unless there was something more compelling in English naval history at that point in time that I am missing.

You obviously weren't paying attention at the start - M&C:TFSOTW is set in 1805. Napoleonic Wars, old boy.

My only question is - are they picking up where the first film left off?

It seems that way from the article, not sure if they will pursue the ghost ship they did in the first movie or if it will just be mentioned.

I LOVE Master and Commander. I started a thread about it a while ago. I'd love to see more adventures of Lucky Jack Aubrey.

Been awhile since I caught it... War of 1812 then for the sequel?

Edit: If the series was based on novels then finding a plot shouldn't be a problem.

OK, I think a few things need to get cleared up here.

First of all FT, Britain was at war with France from 1792 until 1814, with only a short interlude of 1802-1803. There are plenty of stories to tell there, and the end of the movie directly hints at a sequel set immediately after. You Americans don't need to be in everything (and had the novel been properly adapted, it would have been an American frigate being chased by Surprise, and she would have been shipwrecked on a Pacific Island, which would be a dash anticlimactic).

Second, The Far Side of the World is actually the 10th or 11th novel in the series of books. Therefore, they would probably be taking elements of all the novels in order to produce the next movie. Based on past precedent, there's little telling what the plot will be.

Best news I've heard all day. The first film is one of my favourite movies ever. As long as they can get Crowe & Bettany back together, I say go ahead.

History obviously isn't my forte. I first assumed Darwin time because Bettany played that naturalist and those scenes really stood out to me the most. But I am just going by Crowe's character. Obviously it can't take place immediately after the first if Crowe reprises his role with all the time that has gone by. And if his character did return, it would be around 1812ish... so I figured Napolean was tied up with Russia and the rest of Europe and maybe they wouldn't want to rehash a Naval battle with the French. And if it's a prequel, or a sequel based on new characters then good. But being the title of the thread was Master and Commander 2, I figured it was a sequel based on Crowe's character. I am assuming they'll go with a different title if that's the case? Unless all the books in the series are prefaced with Master and Commander.

Erm, FT, I know its been a few years since Crowe played Aubrey, but I can't see how that would preclude a sequel set immediately after (or soon after, 1806 or 1807) The Far Side of the World.

And no, the novels are not prefaced with Master and Commander. I'd imagine that they'd keep it for the movies, but only the first book is called Master and Commander.

One more thing - the books are generally termed the Aubrey-Maturin series (Maturin is the naturalist doctor), so you can't have the sequel being based around either Aubrey or Maturin. It's both, or nothing. Their friendship is one of the key points in many of the novels (and in the movie - think the Galapagos Islands where Maturin operates on himself, and Maturin leaving his specimens behind to warn Aubrey of the Acheron's approach).

For some odd reason, I loved the first movie.

Crowe's relationshiop with Paul Bentlely was so touching.

How about a time travel story back to the Revolutionary War for the Brits to re-seize the colonies?

Why stop there FT? Why not just shoot the treacherous lot of your "founding fathers" before they have a chance to preach their unGodly sedition against his most Brittanic Majesty! :p

Lol you guys. I'm betting the sequel will be a crucible of the other books, as has been mentioned. I have some of them and have never read them. Maybe I should do that while I have the time...

^The first one was a mixture of a few of the books apparently, so I can see them doing the same for sequel, it worked for the first movie brilliantly so I hope it works for this sequel if it happens.

I know I can’t wait for Porky Jack Aubrey.
