Matt's Thread of Racing...

The only problem I have is the "wild card" drivers. The two drivers outside the top 10 with the most wins gets in. Meaning if said driver is 20th in points and won 2-3 races, they could get in the chase.

Indeed. Ever since they went to 12 drivers, they just can't leave the Chase alone and give fans time to get used to it.

Also, I know that Nascar is just looking for ways to improve their sport, but I can't but feel like they're looking for a new way to keep Johnson from winning the title year in and year out. Rather amusing to think about.

It will be funny if Johnson wins the title again under this system.

You watch, Dale Jr. will be 11th in points with one win, while 2 other drivers behind him have multiple wins. The fans won't be happy about that.

He nearly won multiple titles under the old system, and has won the chase in all of it's incarnations, so it would not surprise me at all if he won with this proposed system.

At which point, they'll change the rules again to say that any driver with an 8 on the side of their car gets into the Chase. This is what I think they keep changing the Chase for, trying to get Jr. into the Chase, even though I think his time as a winning driver are over. His head is in so many other places other than racing, he just doesn't have the passion for it anymore.

Well the new point system is out. Don't mind the change too much. Still up in the air about the "Wild Card" drivers. I'm also interested to see what the points would have been in previous years. I heard that last season Johnson would have won the title by 5 points over Hamlin.

TV Comments From FOX's David Hill Spark Reaction

Hill is a character right out of central casting. A brash Aussie, his statements are often confusing given his track record. Here is a man who inserted Digger right over the top of live Sprint Cup Series telecasts, taking away from the focus on the drivers and the race.

Now, Hill is gruffly saying that the focus must be on the drivers and that TV will lead the comeback by example. Few can forget the endless hawking of Digger by Darrell Waltrip on FOX and SPEED telecasts. The same Waltrip who now supports Hill's driver focus once showed-up for a Trackside telecast with a life-size Digger character driving a golf cart. How many times did DW mention Digger merchandise was available on his website?

Hill also was adamant about later start times and eventually pushed through sweeping changes that altered the entire landscape of the sport nationwide. Now, he offers that his perfect start time scenario for Sprint Cup Series races is 1PM local and is suspicious of NASCAR's pending changes.

Sports TV is made up of colorful characters and Hill fits the bill. Love him or hate him, FOX has played a major role in the television development of NASCAR and SPEED is the only TV network located in Charlotte, NC. It should be interesting to see what this season brings from Hill and the gang.

FOX adding "5 minute" digger episodes was completely ridiculous. Fans want to hear about the drivers more than anything. They took the focus away from them and that's one reason why they lost viewers. People don't want to watch an hour pre-race show with little mini episodes that has no relevance to NASCAR.

I've always hated those Pre-race shows. Sure they're fine for a half hour, but an hour, hour and a half? Pass

I don't mind if a race like the Daytona 500 is an hour long. They can recap last season and talk to top drivers. On top of that, fans can get a look at what's happend in the offseason and where said driver might be racing now. Other races, though, need to be left at about a half-hour pre-race.

It would probably kill viewership, but I would do away with televixing the National Anthem, except for big races like Daytona, and the invocation (The entire fanbase of Nascar just screamed blasphemy at the thought of not getting their Jesus on the tv before the race). Let all that be done during the pre-race/commercials like the NFL does it. Then cut from the announcers welcoming us to the race to the command to start engines. They could cut their pre-race down and trim out the fat and I'd be a happy camper getting the race underway ASAP.

Wasn't liking the 2 car "teams" at the start of the last night's race, but after awhile, I kinda warmed up to it. The finish was fantastic. I think the 500 is gonna be pretty fun to watch.

The race has been pretty good so far. I feared these two car packs would create some long ass green flag runs. But these cautions are keeping everyone close. Plus we had a big one

Even though I hate Junior and think he is an average driver that will never win the cup, I wouldn't mind him winning this race.

But only this race :cmad:

Oh boy, Caution with what, four laps to go? Now everyone could win it!

Also, poor Reagan Smith. He had a great chance. Maybe the crew can hammer the side of his car and try to make a run. Poor guy

Man, what's the record for the number of caution flags?

The record is now 15, it used to be 11.

I love the end of these Plate Races. Anyone in the top 15 has a good chance at winning

Man. 20 Years old, his second career race ever, and won The 500. Good for him

Glad to see the Wood Brothers back in victory lane. It's real special since it's the 500. Thought Edwards had it there at the end.

Hahaha. I was cheering when Junior crashed. My hatred for him is as strong as ever :o

David Reagan really ****ed up there. If he had just waited 'till he had passed the line he would have been able to scooch inside and get pushed by Bayne. Probably would have won

What's stupid though is that Trevor Bayne recieves no points for this race since he's full time in the Nationwide. He's 39th in points.

who is this guy?? he's got that wholesome look Nascar likes though

I am a casual racing fan at best, but it's always nice to see new faces win stuff
