Maze Runner: The Death Cure

Dylan O'Brien plays a pretty convincing young badass.

I just started reading the series and now only on book two. I'll never finish in time. :feelin the pressure:

MAZE RUNNER: THE DEATH CURE:

When it comes to film series ending their stories, some are sent off on a high note (“Harry Potter”) or with a sour one (“Hunger Games”), this is solid enough that it just feels the right about of satisfying. Director Wes Ball knew it wasn’t going to split this conclusion into two films, so its refreshing to have this conclusion feel like a real conclusion. Honestly, it does many things that “Mockingjay: Part 2” failed to do in my opinion. One of the primary issues I had with “Mockingjay: Part 2” was the fact how nearly every character death was just breezed through as if the audience didn’t care. When Finnick and Prim were killed off it wasn’t emotional at all for the movie just kept moving. Now when people die in this, it is moving and sad. Even if you don’t feel much attachment to a character, you have to respect that once someone kicks the bucket, the emotion is rightfully justified.
The movie practically says, “You know these characters. Assume that you love them. We got a story to finish. Let’s do this.” From that point, it never seems to stop the brakes to take a breather.

It is exhilarating and fun for the most part, but its almost the equivalent to riding a car with a dude pumped on adrenaline. At first, it's exciting, but at a certain point you scream, “Okay I've had enough. I want to get off this ride now.”

Why the **** is this movie two and a half hours long? I thought I'd maybe go catch a quick matinee that maybe would be about 1hr 50 min or something.

My review

Just like with the previous movies, I enjoyed the hell out of it. Where the Hunger Games falls apart at the finish line and the Divergent series just falls off a cliff, Maze Runner ends on a high note. It's almost 2 and a half hours long, yet it went by pretty fast. They were smart enough to pack everything into one movie instead of splitting into two. The plot is pretty much one big rescue mission, so the action never really slows down. While most of the cast did a fine job (like Dylan O'Brien and Kaya Scodelario), I thought the standouts were Thomas Brodie-Sangster and Rosa Salazar. Also, Walton Goggins shows up and he has a couple of scene stealers. Overall, it's by far the best YA novel adaptation series and it's just a great trilogy in general.

Because they were smart not to split it into two movies.

Glad to hear it! May see it tomorrow.

Even before that Wes Ball was insistent that he would not be following that trend.

Really glad that this is finally out so I don't have to see its generic trailer attached to almost every film I go see at the cinema.

Might check it out at some point in the future, but ever since I started watching the Scorch Trials I was frustrated how the premise from the first film (with the Maze Runner as an environment) was completely gone and the sequel looked like a generic zombie film (brought me some RE: Extinction vibes with those deserts). Never went back to watch it completely ever since.

Enjoyed this quite a bit. They're not game changers by any stretch but the action, cinematography and some of the set pieces were all pretty good.

Yeah, it did feel a little long at times but I can't really think of anything they could've cut to make it any shorter.

I feel like these films have diminishing returns in regards of enjoyment for me.

The first film was a pleasant surprise. The sequel was ok.

Death Cure was kind of meh. I felt the movie dragged at times. They also did that annoying thing with the villain in which they could kill him multiple times but don't so he ends up coming back over and over again.

Shocked at how small Walton Goggins role was. It's been so long since I saw the previous two movies that I struggled to remember what happened. The emotional beats probably didn't land for me because of that.
