I've had a bunch of problems with them like auto renewals happening after turning them off and many many hardware issues with my 360.

Sounds rough. I haven't really had many issues with my 360 other than the disc tray getting jammed frequently and the eject button being broken. Spent $40 to have it fixed... Despite the guy's claim that he fixed it, the tray continued to jam and the button remained broken.

So I haven't gotten into the next gen systems from being busy with school. Are the PS4/Xbone leaps and bounds over last systems?

I have been cracked out for the last 6 or so hours on GTA V for my ps4. I would say it's a pretty significant leap over last gen. Some games are having big problems trying to be for both gens like Shadow of Mordor. The level of detail and the AI sophistication is excellent as well. I was an early adopter and I'm also a die-hard PS man but now is the time to jump on this gen. The library is great and there is no sign of it slowing down anytime soon!
