So, I'm writing a paper for my "Gender & Cities" class, and my thesis is that metrosexuality is the natural evolution of the male identity as women achieve equality in urban society, thus discarding traditional gender roles.

I'd like to know what peoples' thoughts are on things like male spas, David Beckham posing for a gay magazine, or the modern metrosexual's focus on simply himself.

Is it merely attention grabbing, or do you think metrosexuality is just a fad and normal working man / housewife roles will be re-assumed?

(By the way I'm 3/4 done my paper, so I'm not fishing for ideas. I just want to start a discussion on this modern phenomenon)

I think there were always metrosexuals, but people just called them somewhat effeminate, but not quite gay. There are some guys I know that if you wear decent clothes and actually match, they view that as being gay. Go figure.

Huh... I read this response, then I found this clip from an article I was reading:

Abercrombie & Finch may be looked down upon as middlebrow and middle American by the most refined metrosexuals, but its alarming popularity with straight, beer-drinking frat boys is proof of how metrosexuality has gone mainstream -- while its lusciously produced, semi pornographic quarterly catalogues deliver conclusive proof that male narcissism (in photograpic shorthand: Weber-ism), is only ever a post-workout shower away from homoeroticism.

Perhaps this is because nowadays straight men are also emasculated. Female "Sex and the City" metrosexuality has seen to that. Female metrosexuality is the complement of male metrosexuality, except that it's active where male metrosexuality is passive. No longer is a straight man's sense of self and manhood delivered by his relationship to women; instead it's challenged by it. Women are still monarchs of the private world, but increasingly assertive in the public world too. Series like "Oz," set in a male prison and featuring story lines that revolve around violent buggery, probably look like a kind of sanctuary for some men from the female voraciousness of "Sex and the City."

That's the part that struck me... I'm starting to believe that metrosexuality is simply non-sexuality applied to men.

I very much disagree with that article. Just some man who's scared of a strong-minded woman :whatever:

There isnt a problem with looking nice. Tell those guys that they are dirty old losers...

There is a difference between looking nice and professional, and spending more time in the mirror than your wife/gf

I thing with rise of the media and global internet we have become more intrested in image. There is a lot more empthasis for men look good than perhaps there was before. You only have to look at mens magazines to know that.

I hardly think metrosexuality is new though. Look at those golden era Hollywood guys. they obviously took quite an intrest in their apperance.

From what I had heard from my friends, a metro guy is just one who has style and shops but isn't gay... :o

I guess that's the brilliance of it, that it separates grooming habits from homosexuality. I have to wonder if the growth of metrosexuality is due to the "new generation" mindset of me-first...

I don't think so....I dress decent when the occasion calls for it and I bathe regularly....but you wont catch me shopping for moisturizer while wearing Capri pants and carrying a man purse....

Basically so long as you balance out the Armani outfit with womanizing and knowing how to fix your car's fan belt, you're all good.

I don't usually wear capris.:ninja:

Metrosexuality...that's being sexy in a metropolitan area, right?

A pencil thin moustache is treading homosexual/metrosexual territory. Sideburns that go up the sides of your jaws are crossing full blown over.

and the handlebar moustache....unless you are Tom Selleck....screams homosexual

That is the coolest style. You're just jealous:o

but those pencil-thin sideburns are the only kind I can grow :(

anyway, they only go halfway down my ear :o

This trend pisses me off. Men should be men. What is the definition of a man, I have no idea, but it sure isn't going out of your way to act like a woman.

Guys getting bikini waxes or manicures for example.

So the old Back, Sack and Crack then :hyper:

Or the Zack Efron as they call it

It's more acceptable for men to be vain now.:o
