Sci-Fi Mickey 17

Really enjoyed this might have to go see again.

Extremely clever and extremely funny flick. Probably my favorite of his English-language films. And it looks stunning in IMAX. The close-ups, the movement, etc. I found the direction and editing to be standouts on a technical level as well even despite some pacing problems. Scenes would kind of drag out, but there was always a stinger to bring another jolt to it all. Very tough to have the narration and the time jumps feel so coherent as well. Felt like Scorsese in that regard, especially with Pattinson's specific jargon and accent. Needs a rewatch tbh.

Collette and Ackie are also great. Ruffalo is very funny but kinda all over the place a little. Lot of really good support too. The big head-scientist guy and Ruffalo's right hand were great.

(Pattinson is also incredible btw haha)

Yeah the production values on this were great. Good to know that Bong Joon Ho can make good use of that tentpole money. Great cinematography and production design.

I really enjoyed how in-depth they went with life on the vessel, from the food, to their gear, the vehicles, etc.

Well, that was fascinating! This was a very good science fiction film, but also very funny and downright wacky at times as you watch Robert Pattinson die again, and again, and again. He's expendable that way. Seeing Pattinson play against himself was great, and it's another example of how versatile he is as an actor. Never mind the box office- Bong Joon-ho delivered a winner here.

Also, I don't know if it was my IMAX theater or just the film's sound design, but the sound in this film when I saw it was excellent. There were times when I could've sworn someone a few seats down from me was yelling, and no, it was actually just audio from the film!

just got back from It this is only one of 2 movies I have seen with Pattinson in the lead in the theaters this and The Batman he was very good I loved how he played 17 and 18 a bit different even tho they were the 'same guy' and yeah a lot of the supporting cast was great and Toni was also good as the Boss's crazy wife.

Some analysis and commentary of Mickey 17's box office at Deadline:

Dude is a bit pessimistic, IMO. He thinks it should have been made for less, and maybe better marketing.

But box office isn't everything; I'm glad this original sci-fi has been getting good reviews.

I don't care about the budget if the film doesn't belong to a franchise or not wanting to have a sequel. I don't think they are aiming for a sequel anyway. Just enjoy the fact that the movie doesn't look cheap and the money was put into good use, which sounds like, that was the case.

$118 million isn't that big anyway, like we've had plenty of box office bombs with a budget of over $200 million.

And it's not like WB paid that $100+ for nothing. Bong Joon Ho is an Oscar winner; Pattison is A-list; and they're doing a sci-fi story. Now, if they paid so much and it looked crappy, or everyone phoned it in, that might be one thing, but I haven't seen that complaint.

Movie was great but im not surprised it’s doing poorly at the box office. What matters is the movie wasn’t a ****ing tax write off. It’s wild that a movie getting released is a cause for celebration in our current media landscape.

Why am I seeing more garbage ass reports about losses then people talking about the actual film and how good it is? Goddamn this **** gross. Nobody reporting on films seems to care about the films themselves.

Maybe a certain billionaire doesn't like it. 🤔

Yeah, I don’t see them sticking around in the long run with mister cheap hands at the head, but bless them! They gave PTA 100 mill and got DiCaprio in it, Inarritu got a big budget with Tom Cruise, and they got BJh with Battinson.

A CEO thinking his films won't make money and being frustrated about it is not some crazy thing to me. He made the bed. He okayed the projects. What happens happens. I can't control that. I can talk about films though. The actual interesting part of all of this.

Yup.

They greenlit some of the most interesting upcoming studio movies.

But I also think they are stuck with a marketing team that doesn't know how to handle off kilter / non-IP projects.

This was a great time. Pattinson was great in this and I also enjoyed Mark Ruffalo and Toni Collette chewing up the scenery as the absolute worst people. I loved it but I can also see why a lot of people wouldn't go for it. It's not a movie for everyone.

This film 100% deserved a better marketing campaign and release date.
The release date wasn't the problem. There was basically no competition last weekend. The problem is that it's not a crowd-pleaser blockbuster that you'd normally associate those types of budgets with. I'm just happy it was made at all.

Like I mentioned before, we just have to be satisfied these days if movies get made and are released instead of thrown out as a tax write off. This is where we are.
