The Creator new sci-fi movie from Gareth Edwards

It's Edwards. He's not a good storyteller. I don't like Rogue One all that much anymore, but there is a reason they snatched it away from him. Because pretty visuals are only one part of a film.

Early praise for work like this needs to be taken with a grain of salt, because those who post about it are critics who got invited somewhere to give it love. That's why it's the same set of people every time.

Just got back from watching this now in the UK and thought it was excellent. One of the better sci-fi films I've seen in recent years and maybe not quite up there with my favourites in that genre such as Sunshine or Interstellar, but it wasn't a million miles short.

I'd give it a solid 8/10, far from perfect, although what film is? Certainly recommend anyone sitting on the fence to go and watch it. Considering the budget, the effects look superb too, especially when you compare it to some films recently which spent considerably more money and fall far short of the standard here.

I loved Rogue One by the same director if that's anything to go by and easilly think it's the best Star Wars film since the original trilogy but wasn't keen on Godzilla, although after watching this will have to give it another try as was looking forward to that film at the time as loved that character since being a kid so maybe worth another go.

Yeah, Edwards strike me as more of an aesthetics guy more than anything else. He's good at visuals and scale, but seems to not care at all about making empathetic and three-dimensional characters. I'll never get over how they hyped Elizabeth Olsen's role in Godzilla as one with "real depth." I think his main problem is he doesn't seem to know what story he's trying to tell, so he just shoots all possible variations of everything with multiple cameras and hopes he'll find it in the edit. I remember on Rogue One they shot an absurd amount of footage, so much so the editing took far longer than most films. He even shot that scene from the trailer with Jyn approaching the TIE Fighter knowing it wouldn't make it into the movie.

As someone who likes Gareth Edwards, I can definitely understand a lot of the criticisms people lobby at him. But are we really at the point where we're calling his movies non-cohesive just to dunk on his skills as a director further? Godzilla 2014, for all its faults, is everything but an incohesive mess so I have no idea where you pulled that from. As for Rogue One, that movie's issues do not fall solely on him. Especially when he pretty much had nothing to do with the last act of the movie.

Source? I take it this is something he might have addressed in his recent Reddit AMA, but I would like clarification just to be sure.

“It was something the marketing team fell in love with,” Edwards says. “We knew it would not be in the film. It’s one of those things where all the trailers are put together way before the film comes out. It wasn’t a specific part of the story.”

There's also this interview with the editor that goes more in-depth about the process.

The best way to describe this is The Last of Us meets Cyberpunk 2077.

Visually stunning? Absolutely. It puts 99% of big blockbusters to shame.

Kind of devoid of emotion? Yeaaaah. Its not as affecting as it thinks it is.

Also, probably the most forgettable Zimmer score i've heard in a while. Still, i had a good time. For the most part.

The Tie scene didn't actually exist in any version of the movie. It was just for the trailers. The Tie wasn't suppose to be there and but they added it after they knew it wasn't making the cut. :funny:

The finale of Rogue One was completely reshot, with another director on hand because of how non-cohesive it was. The entire third act was changed to the point, that they had to reshoot other parts of the movie to make it work.

I would say the same for Godzilla 2014. There is no story there because of it.

Hahaha I'm one of the few people who prefer Jedi. I accept Empire holds up better but I was very young when it come out so the Yoda scene dragged a bit and by the time Jedi come out I was at a far better age to appreciate it more. The Sarlacc Pit is still my favourite scene in any Star Wars film to this day.
You asked for perfection. I gave you perfection. :cwink:

I of course love RotJ, but compared to Empire, it's not just not an even fight imo. I once watched this video on framing comparing the two, and it really showed the difference in quality from a technical and storytelling aspect.

I really dislike Edwards Godzilla movie when I first saw it. But through watching it again a few times I have completely turned around on the movie and love it now. Give it another shot.

Couldn't agree more. I've no doubt Empire is the better film all around, then again, Shawshank Redemption is a lot better than Commando but if I was watching one tonight I'd definitely go for the latter

I'll take the Blu ray out of it's seal at some point and give it another go! Someone mentioned earlier on this thread the wooden acting, and I couldn't agree more. Considering the quality of actor they had in the film, if baffled me how that was possible, I get the idea about building up the suspense of Godzilla too, but still would have liked to have seen a little bit more of him in it. I think part of the problem, for me, was the initial teaser that was released a long long time before the film which set a great tone to it despite showing nothing of the film if I remember right as can't find it anywhere. Really thought it was going to be something special at that point, so may have been expecting too much.

Yeah I won't say the characters get any better. The acting helps and Cranston makes the most of his screen time. But I don't know, I was really brought in by the atmosphere and scale of the movie upon re-watch and I have come to really appreciate it.

Just got back! Easily one of the most visually gorgeous movies I've seen in recent memory. The sense of scale that Gardeth brings to his films is here once again in full force! I found the story to be interesting enough, though I think mileage may vary for each person with that. Regardless, I highly recommend it!

One of the critics I usually agree with gave this 1 1/2 stars out of 4 so I'm pretty sure I'll be skipping this in theaters. It gives me Elysium vibes.

Elysium wasn't a masterpiece but it was worth watching imo.

This was just alright I guess. JDW gave nothing in a lot of scenes, Gemma Chan was actually decent here though and usually I find her to be pretty bland as an actress. The movie also couldve been shorter. Edward’s knows how to stretch a dollar and make a movie look expensive but the two movies I’ve seen from him (this and Godzilla) have been disappointing.

Man, I was really loving this first hour of this but it kind of went off the rails in the second half IMO. I still ended up enjoying it though because of the gorgeous visuals, the tone and all the cool worldbuilding but I can understand why its receiving such polarizing reactions from some people.

That being said this is far from a bad film IMO and its a shame that it isn't doing well at the BO because its easily one of the best looking sci-fi films I've seen in a while and more than worthy of the bigscreen.

Also, I thought badass, Ripley esque Allison Janney stole the show.
