Microsoft doubles down on gaming with $7.5 billion deal for Doom-owner ZeniMax

Microsoft buying Bethesda and Zenimax for $7.5bn

Microsoft has announced it will acquire ZeniMax Media, the parent company of Bethesda, id Software, Arkane Studios, MachineGames, Tango Gameworks and more, for $7.5bn.

The list of games franchises now part of the Xbox family makes for astonishing reading. It includes The Elder Scrolls, Fallout, Doom, Dishonored, Wolfenstein, Prey, Rage, The Evil Within, Quake and the upcoming Starfield.

My anticipation level for these in order:

TES!!!!
Doom/Starfield
Fallout
Rage/Wolfenstein/Quake
Dishonored/Prey/The Evil Within

Hopefully Microsoft forces Bethesda to stop using that archaic jury rigged bug infested Creation engine.

And maybe Microsoft can actually force Bethesda to do some ****ing proper quality checks and testing before they release their damn games.

Yeah, the number of bugs needs to be cut down massively. On Skyrim I had a game breaking quest glitch after my first major (amazing) wandering around the world. It got fixed eventually but the less of these the better. I’d rather they went for quality than just bigger and bigger worlds which will come with even more bugs.

The rumor now is mS has the funds to buy two additional studios.

If one of them ends up being EA that would mean ME would become Xbox exclusive again. Which honestly, I would not mind that. I've always recognized it as mostly an Xbox franchise and it started off as a 360 exclusive anyway.

Buying the whole of EA would be crazy! It could be hard to make it work with all the sports franchises, but I would love for them to take over the non-sports IPs from EA who are not doing a good job with them. Mass Effect would be the most important one for me. I do get the feeling that they aren't done with acquisitions.

if they did end up buying EA then they would be obligated to make the sports games multiplatform. it's something to do with the licensing agreement with NBA/NFL/FIFA etc. but original IPs would be up in the air.

Since it's two studios, then EA is surely out of the equation since it's also a publisher like Bethesda.

I'm willing to bet on Moon Studios (Ori games) and/or Asobo (A Plague Tale, Flight Simulator 2020).

Both make a lot of sense.

how about Sega?

There were rumours about Sega being a target. Not sure how much was behind the rumours and how good a fit they would be, but it would still be another major acquisition. Sega’s back catalogue has a tonne of nostalgia value while they have done good stuff on pc recently which could be added to pc gamepass.

I saw some of those "hints" in the Twittersphere yesterday. Some seem far-fetched to be honest like that new Xbox controller which apparently has the same blue as Sega's logo. :funny:

Yeah I saw that. Also the tweet “So iconic” being a disguised hint at Sonic. :hehe:

As long as they buy a game studio that mostly releases 1st person games, then it wouldn't affect me. I don't have a lot of EA games, I'm still waiting for Fallen Order to go in sale, but I would want to get the sequel when its released.

nothing is gonna be announced at TGS, unless they are intentionally trying to throw us off:

Nothing at the show, maybe straight after lol. :hehe:

This deal is crazy. All of Star Wars was $4b.
Minecraft (mS's biggest IP and also the biggest game of all time) was sold for like $2.5 billion. Even the film rights to Harry Potter I think was sold in the tens of millions and relatively speaking that was a steal for WB.

The difference in first party at the start of last gen compared to the start of the upcoming one is crazy.

yeah next generation is not gonna be an easy win for Sony which a lot of people assumed it was going to be. it is gonna be way more interesting than that
The recent news makes it closer than it would have been, but I think Sony will have too big a head start due to their existing install base for this coming gen. But the gen after this one is a different story and absolutely anything could happen. Xbox could do quite a lot of catching up once all these new studios start delivering regular content from about 2022 onwards.

yeah. Xbox is definitely in a much stronger position...........long term.

And 2022 seems like a right number when we will start seeing the results of all these acquisitions. But, it could take longer than 2022 before we really start seeing results.

And that is under the assumption that whatever these studios produce will be good or even mega-successful.

The problem is that none of this really helps the state of Xbox now, especially when the new console is launching. Xbox would be in a much stronger (and nicer) position if some of those 1st party studio games were ready to go at launch or early 2021 (launch window).

Right now, if you buy the Series X/S, you are really buying into the promise and hope of a strong Xbox future some years down the line. And there's nothing wrong with that. To a certain extent, you are doing that with the PS5, since Sony still hasn't answered a lot of questions about the PS5.

However, the difference is that Sony has a strong track record of delivering solid content, both 1st and 3rd party, on its Playstations, going back to PS1 and now with this past gen of the PS4.

So, one is more apt to trust that Sony will continue to deliver with the PS5, while still being wary of Xbox, since they basically forfeited last gen and don't have as solid a track record.

And keep in mind, while Sony may lack the deep pockets to do a huge deal like Bethesda, I doubt they are just sitting idly by and not working on deals of their own. Sony certainly can't afford to be complacent though, because MS definitely made a power move with the Bethesda deal.

Next gen will certainly be interesting to watch that's for sure.

And the question is how many new Bethesda games are going to come out in the Series X and S for the next 7 years before the next console like Ps6 is announced.

Its still a wait and see. Meanwhile on Sony's side - theres already Miles Morales, Horizon Forbidden West, God of War Ragnarok is Cöming, Demons Soul remake, Rachet & Clank Dimensions, Returnal, Destruction Allstars, a new Astro, a LittleBigPlanet spin off and we know a new Naughty Dog game is already under development which should come out maybe in 3 years.
