Military allowing more convicted felons to enter their ranks

Because robbing a convenience store out of desperation or smoking dope (a felony in some states) is basically the same thing as rape.

Re-read, then explain how this new concept will help the problem I mentioned. All I said is that it will not help, what I consider a serious concern. Besides, on the news it was said some sex offenders were to be allowed in. More so, the fact that felons in and out of the system will be less likely to put their necks on the line to speak out. I'm not saying this new development will substantially worsen things, only that they won't help.

You could say they are connected but, there was gang graffiti popping up in Iraq long before they lowered the standards to allow convicts to enlist.

Exactly, gangs have already been an issue this whole time. Like I said, this isn't going to help matters.

I'm hoping that gang members shouldn't be a problem. All gangs are stupid, and a military beating will beat the gang crap out of a person. A member of the Aryan Nation joins the military. I bet he won't be a Neo-Nazi after he finishes his term. A crip or blood joins the miliary. He better keep that crap to himself, or he'll probably get a quick beatdown, and will be have a new perspective on life by his sergeant, other superiors, and/or peers. They have no time for that crap.

The problem with neo nazis specifically, is how they'll go just for the military training, only to pass it on to their people at home. They just keep it low key while they're there.

You'd be extremely surprised how many people in the military are still connected to gang affiliates and the like. To say "all gangs" are stupid displays a lack of knowledge on the proposed purposed of some "gangs". My Captain is a proud member of the Crips. I myself am affiliated with the Bloods. Do either of us care? No. This is one thing that comes from the Army or most military factions. They bring the opposites to a point of understanding. Who cares who you're affiliated with and what set you claim. We're all the same, living breathing being.

People grow and take this idealism with them back into the civilian world. Your words insulted me to the point of being forced to address them. Please, stop speaking ignorantly on such things.

out of the 500k soldiers we have in our ranks, about 10 percent of them are what you describe as felons....when they ETS (get out of the service) they always end up better off than before.

When I said 'the military in the US is such a class system', I remembered the Michael Moore documentary where basically the military would go to all the poor towns to recruit, and there does seem to be a big gap between the amount of poor/working class and the amount of rich or middle class in the military.

It's probably the same in the UK. I don't know.

Trust me he's not in any gang. But I can see where there are benefits to being in the military for gang members. They get to shoot civilians without repucussions like they would in the real world.

I've been reading some research on gangs and there are some pretty powerful social forces at work in these situations. Often times, gangs are seen as the local "military" and it becomes a young man's duty to join. And sometimes if an offer to join a gang is refused, there can be serious consequences for the person refusing. He can be ostracized, beaten or even killed for ignoring his "duty". And for many of these people, simply relocating is not a financial option.

Granted, many people join gangs for money or prestige, but saying that only "idiots" do so is to ignore the reality of the situation.

Agreed. Plenty of Ex cons fresh out of jail who might be trying to get themselves in order have a hard enough time finding work.No one wants to hire a person that was convicted of theft.

Hardly. It's no easy task to go into war nor are the benefits worth the pains of any nations. but it honestly is easy to make a few thousand just by being in the right place in the right uniform =/.

I Joined the Bloods to make a difference in movements in my neighborhood. the violence associated with us is mostly due to the younger, wrongly directed kids "claiming" our flag.
