I thought this film would be all but lost to me considering it played a few months back at my local indie theater, but I guess A24 put out a limited release before Oscar season, and I leapt at the chance to see it despite the fact that I really should've spent the time elsewhere.
Needless to say, this film was just tremendous. I saw a THR roundtable with directors, which Barry Jenkins participated in and he talked about the first film that really affected him was Wong Kar-wai's Chunking Express. At that point, everything about Moonlight basically clicked for me. It's basically Jenkins' love letter to the works of Wong Kar-wai.
It's impressionistic, moody and Jenkins really succeeds in sort of homaging Wong Kar-wai's ability to put as he says, interiority on screen. This movie is a feeling film, and it's fun to try and find all the Wong Kar-wai references if you're familiar with his works (I only know his major stuff so I didn't catch it all, but did manage to pick a few out)
Mahershala Ali is just mesmerizing in the film. What a year he's had.
I know people were all La La Land vs Moonlight, but now I'm strictly in the Moonlight category.
